Product Description

JetPens.com proudly presents the Rotring 800 Drafting Pencil - 0.5 mm - Black Body. Can a Rotring 600 become any better? Yes, add a retractable tip and you have the incredible Rotring 800. Rotring mechanical pencils are highly sought-after and requested at JetPens. The weight and feel are exactly what many people expect for professional drafting pencils. The Rotring 800 has a 4 mm lead sleeve that fully retracts, an all-metal brass body, a traditional knurled grip, and a clip. The lead sleeve is smoothly retracted by twisting the knurled section near the top of the pencil. This feature is wonderful for protecting the tip of this weighty pencil and your pockets. Engineers admire this pencil for its solid construction, lead advancement mechanism, and long guide pipe that provides an excellent view of the lead. A refillable eraser sits at the top, concealed by a cap. The pencil is stylish, with a technical look and high-quality parts. Its hexagonal form is reminiscent of traditional wooden pencils, and accents include the iconic Rotring red circle below the eraser. The pencil comes in a narrow cardboard box, and a larger silver cardboard gift box is also included. For further information, view the manual. The video below demonstrates the features of this Rotring 800 drafting pencil:

I absolutely love this pencil. It is very well made and feels nice in the hand. There is a slight wobble in the tip but that doesn't bother me that much. Also it seems like the lead breaks within the pencil. If anyone has this same problem and knows what can be done to fix it please let me know. Other than that it is perfect.

I'm a mechanical engineer who received this product as a Christmas gift in 2013. My immediate impression was that the quality of the craftsmanship was better than any mechanical pencil I had previously owned. However, after using the pencil for roughly 5 minutes I immediately noticed two problems. One large, one small.

The large problem had to do with the widely experienced issue of the lead breaking off inside the tip. I researched Amazon reviews to see if other users were having the same issue and was surprised by the amount that were. I considered returning the product for a refund but got to thinking. As an engineer I asked myself "For such a generally well engineered product, obviously the designers wrote with their product and would notice a huge problem like the lead constantly breaking, right?" So I took the pencil apart and immediately noticed an issue... If you unscrew the knurled grip from the hexagonal body you'll find the lead holder inside. At the end is a brass tip screwed to the lead holder. This brass tip was not screwed to the lead holder securely and was able to wiggle/bend when touched. During shipping or assembly, I guess the two pieces became loose. By screwing the brass tip to the lead holder tightly, I have had no lead break off in the tip.

The small problem I mentioned has to do with the wider than desired tolerance between the retractable tip and the pencil body itself. When writing, the tip has a small bit a play in it and doesn't feel entirely rigid. Others have also noticed this problem. Because this is a manufacturing tolerance issue with the retractable tip option on the 800 model, I can't see a way to remedy the issue. I have a co-worker with a Rotring 600, and it doesn't have this issue. Because of this small tolerance issue for such an expensive pencil, I give this product 4 stars.

I use mechanical pencils every day and this is by far the best one I have ever used! I have used a cross for 20 years and will likely give that one to my son now...
