This is album is pure evil and heteful black metal. The sound is raw, primitive, violent and thrashy. Essential album by an essential and very influential band.

I'd originally gotten this cassette back in the early 90's for a dollar somewhere, and it was my first sample of black metal. This stuff still sounds extremely evil and raw even in comparison to the younger bands that came afterwards. Nearly a decade of repeated playing is finally beginning to take its toll on that old cassette, and it's not easy to find either a new cassette or a new CD copy of it anywhere- fans of dark and brutal metal who've never heard this should grab it whenever they come across it. Out of all the Sarcofago recording's I've heard, none quite come close to touching the nightmarish, brutal, insane genius of "Rotting".

Vocals are undistorted, tormented, blistering shrieks in a Brazilian accent so thick it could be hacked apart with a machete- in this style of music the vocals are not necessarily meant to be clearly understood, but what I could understand is chilling and nightmarish. The music is all buzz-saw guitars and blastbeats with tortured, alien-sounding guitar solos, played at break-neck speed, and the production is raw, as if it were recorded in a garage or warehouse somewhere (perhaps in a crumbling Brazilian city, or in a sweltering South-American jungle, or in the sulfrous flames of the abyss, or perhaps in a shadowy netherworld of nightmare and cosmic horror?), adding to the horrific, desolate third-world charm of a recording like this.

Tracks include "The Lust", the most disconcerting and ghastly intro I've ever heard; the explosive and nerve-shattering "Alcoholic Coma"; "Tracy" which might be some sort of insane and unholy love song (the song breaks into one of the fastest and most chaotic blast beats on the entire album as the vocalist's deranged voice mournfully shrieks "Tracy, I love you!"- and I can only think that this couldn't possibly be a good thing for poor Tracy); the blasphemous "Rotting"- perhaps the most repulsive and evil sounding song I've ever heard (although "Nightmares" would also be a good choice there); "Sex, Drinks, and Metal" (which sounds incredibly out of place on this album, to me actually being the only letdown on the recording); and finally the last glimpse onto this hellish landscape: the strange, hideous "Nightmares" which slowly pounds and chugs like some sort of monstrous machine to a faster paced climax with eerie, twisting psychotic images drawn in strangled guitar noise, and then the abrupt silence of the end of the song and the entire recording.

This album is ghastly and nightmarish in ways no other death metal, grindcore, or black metal band I've ever heard of could ever hope to be; the frantic, suffocating music isn't merely a wall of noise, it is a remarkably visual experience which reveals to the mind's eye the depth of horror this band is attempting to portray, it's shocking, relentless, grotesque, oppressive, deranged, and apocalyptic: in short, this is an unparalleled classic of the genre.

This is some of Sarcofago's nastiest tracks all on one CD.. Track listing is..1.) The Lust2.) Alcoholic Coma3.) Tracy4.) Rotting5.) Sex Drinks & Metal6.) NightmaresAll the tracks on here are absolutely devastating! Definitely not for humanitarian wimps! Some stand out tracks.. "Alcoholic Coma", Tracy, Rotting.. Gee, all the tracks on here are truly killer! JUst get this CD! It's pretty much the epitome of sick black / thrash. I give all my little orange stars to this unholy CD! It's really that good, and I listen to this constantly.. The vocals are harsh, the guitars sound like angry chainsaws, and the drumming will pound you into dust! Production is RAW, and fits the musick perfectly! Also get the I.N.R.I album! That's suppose to be very good as well.. Long live SARCOFAGO!
