5.0 out of 5 stars Someone for us Georgia Tech fans!
I loved Lewis Grizzard, but he was a UGA fan and gave us Tech people a hard time sometimes. Now, with Ed Williams, we have a modern Georgia humorist who is an unabashed Tech fan. If you haven't read "Rough As A Cob," and you love Georgia Tech, you owe it to yourselves to do so, especially the part where Ed lays out the truth behind the Tech/Georgia rivalry.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tries too hard to be funny
"Rough as a Cob," by Ed Williams III, is a compilation of ten stories that attempt to be hilarious, but fail to deliver the punch at the end. They are based on growing up in the rural South of Juliette, Georgia and attempt too hard to use this as the root of the humor. (...)

This book provides stories that are somewhat entertaining about the life of Ed Sr.,...

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved Rough as a Cob, June 29, 2003
By
"Rough as a Cob" is a necessary read for anyone that grew up in the rural South during the 60's and 70's. If you want to sit down and enjoy several hours of "memory lane", this is the book for you! It is a continuation of extremely funny stories that were recorded by the author in his previous book. If you did happen to experience life during this era, this book sums it up to the fullest. Mr. Williams is a wonderful story-teller and he makes you feel like you are right there experiencing exactly what was going on at that moment. If you happen to have been blessed with the "accent" and culture of the "South", and have a sense of humor, no less, you must read this book! It is so entertaining that once you start, you cannot put it down until you have read every last word. It is pure reading pleasure; however, it also gives you history of how "we" grew up during that time. I reccommend this book to anyone that feels like I do that laughing will keep you happy and enable you to live a much healthier life. LAUGHING ROCKS!! Thanks Mr. Williams for this newest dose of medicine!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gifted the book, January 6, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rough As a Cob: More from the Juliette Journals (Paperback)
I bought this book as a gift for a dear friend. I had heard that it was good. I scanned through it a bit before I gave it away, but I can see that I will have to get it back so I can give it a proper read. The few bits I saw told me this would be as funny as I had heard, and I will likely buy the other two as well. I will try to update this after I have read it for myself, but at first blush... it will be well worth the price.

I also wanted to be sure to give KUDO's to Seashellbooks Inc. whom I bought this book from (Via AMAZON.com) They took real care to ensure the book arrived as advertized! that is to say it arrived in perfect condition, in less time than I expected.

I also give Amazon credit in the fast hassle free checkout and easy to navigate web pages that brought this book to my attention, well done Amazon.

I am very happy with the deal in all respects, and would enjoy doing buisnes in the future with all parties involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rough as a Cob is Great Readin'!, May 30, 2003
By
William M. Bowen (Chapin, S.C. United States) - See all my reviews
Ed Williams has a knack of turning real life situations into just plain fun. Love of God, family and country, though sacred, create happy times by encouraging us to laugh at ourselves.
Oh that those who take themselves so seriously would take Rough as a Cob (and Sex Dead Dogs and Me) as text books for how "to love one another" through laughter.
I just don't know how to review a masterpiece of good southern stories (for all people .. even Yankees ..) except to say it'll help us all to "love one another" ... "try it you'll like it"
Thanks you Ed for sharing your God given gift of humor!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is not bedtime reading!, May 27, 2003
By
Jenny Watson (Louisville, GA United States) - See all my reviews
I knew this would be as funny as Ed's last book, Sex, Dead Dogs and Me, so I started reading it the day I got it, right before bed. The book is so hilarious, it was hard to sleep! Ed writes in a conversational style that makes you feel he's just talking to you at the kitchen table.

My sons are playing little league this summer, so I especially liked the chapter on types of parents you see at little league games: "the socialist mom" (who thinks all kids, regardless of ability should get equal playing time), or the solicitor dad, (who is always trying to sell you something). I'm still looking for the centerfold mom, but haven't spotted her yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have never laughed so hard in my life!, December 22, 2003
By
A friend of mine who visited a book trade show brought back a copy of this and told me that I had to read it. Well, I did. My god, I laughed until my sides hurt, and I pure embarrassed myself at home one evening by knocking over an orange juice pitcher when I flung my arms out from laughing. This book is the funniest I have ever read.

I did some research, and found the author wrote a first book called Sex, Dead Dogs, and Me. I can't find a copy anywhere, and I have looked. Will there be more books from this author, please say yes, I am dying to read more! Please!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rollickin' Good Time, September 15, 2003
By
Deb (Kentucky) - See all my reviews
Ed Williams' stories of growing up in Georgia are great. His pride in being Southern, and his love for his family and the Brotherhood come through in this raucous, rollicking good time of a book.

Ed's a man's man, and sexy.... If he ever decides he needs a woman to share his raucous life with I hope he thinks of me!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best in Southern Humor!, May 17, 2003
Reviewed by: Kristie Leigh Maguire,

I knew that "Rough as a Cob" was not going to be the normal book from the moment I opened that manila envelope, pulled the book out and saw the outhouse on the cover. Then as I was thumbing through the pages and saw the chapter entitled, Listen, Listen, The Cat is Pissin, my first impression that this was indeed a most unusual book was reinforced.

I had a real problem in reading "Rough as a Cob". Not because it was a bad book. It wasnt. No, my problem in reading it was because it is extremely difficult to read with tears rolling down your face from laughing so hard. My warning to the reader: Do NOT read this book in a library or any other place that requires silence. It will be impossible to read Rough as a Cob without cracking up with laughter. Ed Williams just keeps on rolling out those hilariously funny stories without any relief in sight. This is one of the funniest books that I have ever read.

Since I am a romance writer as well as a reviewer, I believe that I enjoyed reading Eds romance chapter, 'Sally the Screamer, the most. As Ed said, A good love story just cant be beat. You will just have to read this chapter to truly appreciate a good love story Ed Williams style.

My next favorite chapter was Snake in the Cobs!. This chapter will fill you in on all you ever wanted to know about bathroom equity or as Ed says, Bathroom equity can lead to some very serious consequences. Now I know why Ed named this book "Rough as a Cob".

Lewis Grizzard was my all time favorite Southern humorist. Ed Williams has now been added to my very short list of Southern humorists that I admire and enjoy. Who knows? He just may become my favorite if he keeps cranking out books like his first novel, "Sex, Dead Dogs and Me" and "Rough as a Cob".

Ed Williams is a gifted story teller, telling stories of his life, documenting his special memories and people who've touched his heart, these stories will keep them alive for future generations.
I recommend anyone in need of a smile or an almost nonstop belly laugh to read "Rough As A Cob" or anyone of Mr. Williams' books. I promise, you'll have fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just When I Thought He Couldn't Outdo The First One...., December 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rough As a Cob: More from the Juliette Journals (Paperback)
Ed Williams continued his life story in "Rough As A Cob" with even more hilarity than "Sex, Dead Dogs, and Me". I have now read all of Ed's books, albeit out of order. I started with his most recent, "ChristmaSin", then went to the first one "SDDAM", and just finished "RAAC", but it doesn't matter because Ed is a consummate storyteller. He brings the reader with him to the escapade making them feel as if each detail is happening for the first time and that we are there with him taking part in the hilarity. He made me wish I had been there for the 'rasslin' match, I would have sat ringside hootin' and hollerin' right along with them, not caring in the least that the crowd was ready to kill us.

I can honestly say that I have never laughed so hard reading any book as I did while reading "RAAC". I should have known better than to bring the book with me to a high school basketball game and read it while our team was losing dreadfully...I was laughing hysterically, holding my stomach, all the while receiving death-ray glares from the other parents. I wonder what title of 'Sports Mom' he would bestow on me for that behaviour~certainly not the 'Socialist Mom' or the 'Benchwarmer Mom'~I could only hope for the 'Centerfold Mom', but that's highly unlikely.

While Ed is enormously gifted with his comedic flair, his writing talent also lends itself to the clarity of the characters ~ from the homeliness of Charlie Pound to the vocal attributes of 'Sally the Screamer'. What is also apparent is the obvious love he has for his family and friends and respect for his elders. He writes about them in a way that I'd be proud to know them and would be happy if they lived next door. I hope he writes more books. I will definitely read these three over and over while I await the next one.

Only one thing I disagree with Ed on, Shemp is NOT the funniest Stooge, Larry is.
