4.0 out of 5 stars Good Electric Brazil, December 31, 2003
This review is from: Rough Guide to Brazilian Electronica (Audio CD)
I had been thinking of picking up Fernand Porto's cd for a while, but just didn't know what to really expect. Seeing as this had a track of hers, figured I'd hear her and a few others.

This compilation is quite good, actually. This is almost like a "modern" update to the Caipirissima compilation from 1999-2000. You have real Brazilian artists, and as such, you get that real Brazilian sound if that makes sense. Even with Suba, he is considered a Paulista and his two cuts here pretty much outline the electronic Brazil sound, as this cd was trying to showcase. The Macumbalada song is pretty sweet (although you can hear it on another fantastic cd called "Brazil After Dark"), as is the funky remix to "Meu Guarda Chuva. Ramiro Musotto kicks in with his trademark effects and very rich sound, vocals and production - albeit it's a rather short track. And yes... the Fernanda Porto song is great!

Not eveyrsong grabbed me however, and some tracks seemed just a bit too over the top so it cannot get the highest ranking. Also, the remake to Samba De Uma Nota So does feature Claudia Telles on vocals, but this version can be found on Bossa Cuca Nova's first cd: "Revisited Classics". The song seems a bit too gimmicky now, but then again the Bossa Cuca Nova version is from 1998-1999. All in all, I'd recommend it. If you're into the breaks, beats and want to know what some of the new electronic sounds are in Brazil, check it out! And if you dig this, check out both of Suba's cds, <BPM>, Caipirissima and maybe the Brazilian Beats series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Far better than average set -- worth checking out!, May 17, 2004
This review is from: Rough Guide to Brazilian Electronica (Audio CD)
Nice collection! The automatic compatibility of Brazilian bossa and samba with modern electronica has been taken as a given for many years, but the easy assumptions of many mixers -- particularly DJs in the European acid jazz/lounge/dance music cliques -- have not always borne out the synthesis out. This collection stands out amidst the many bland "Brazilian" chill out discs, highlighting several artists with a genuine feel for Brazilian grooves and more to offer than the same old drum'n'bass sound and formless ambient meanderings. Interesting, creative stuff... well worth checking out, particularly as it will lead you to several of Brazil's more innovative modern artists, such as Fernanda Porto, Rebeca Matta and Ramiro Musotto. Recommended!
