Review

"There are several things I look for in a good thriller, one of those elements being the way a chapter ends. The author has a great talent for this, and on many occasions I was left hanging at the end of a chapter with a compelling scene that kept me turning pages to say the least." ~ Cheryl Bradshaw, Shamus Award Finalist and USA Today Bestselling author.

"I was trying hard to think of what may happen next and the author threw a curve ball at me as a body turns up....then another....then another. Put three well known horror writers in the same town and sit back and watch the horror come to them." ~ Chris Blewitt, author of the #1 selling Sports Fiction novel Deep Rough.

I don't have much patience for continuing a book in which I've started to lose interest, or I frankly consider stupid (stupid characters or stupid plot), so I only finish about 5% of the books I start. ROUGH DRAFT was a book I couldn't put down. This book was crafily composed with interesting characters, and provided a nail-biting, suspenseful plot. I've never written a review before, but felt compelled to pass on a big "Thank you" to the author for producing a great and entertaining read, and to suggest to readers to give this book a try. I bet you'll be hooked from the first page.

As soon as I finished reading Rough Draft, I immediately Googled the town in question, wondering if these events were partly true, it was so well-written. The book pulls you into the story as you try and keep up with the twists and turns that follow the characters. I was trying hard to think of what may happen next and the author threw a curve ball at me as a body turns up....then another....then another. Put three well known horror writers in the same town and sit back and watch the horror come to them.

Three writers of horror novels, are blackmailed into going to a cabin to collaborate on a fictional account of the disappearance of the people in Pike, a nearby old time mining town. The person behind the blackmail was not predictable.
For suspense and plot this book is a real winner. It was fast-paced and hard to put down.
The one thing that I didn't like was the portrayal of the female novelist. Initially when the three meet the two males are surprised to find that Vic, whom they both respect as the best writer, is actually short for Victoria. Victoria is made out to be the sniveling, crying and hysterical woman needing to be held by a man for comfort. The men not only take on the role of Victoria's protectors, but also believe that they have to keep her from getting upset. This is just too stereotypical. This is a woman who can write such vivid horror tales; yet she is the one needing to be protected by the other two? I would have loved to have seen the author add some scenes where Victoria showed the gumption to fight as well as the two men.
But as a thriller, this book is masterful!

I loved this book! Once I started reading it I wasn't able to put t down. The only thing that kept me from giving it five stars was that I was left with a question or two, making me wonder if the author forgot to tie up a few loose ends or if he did tie them up before he really should have. I also think that the book could have been so much more if the characters were given deeper parts.
I would recommend this book though. I think that its storyline is unique and it was easy to read.

I want to start by saying I really enjoyed this book. The plot is fantastic, and definitely engrossing, even if the ending is a little weak. If it weren't for the really stupid writing mistakes, it would have had a four star review instead.
For the authors (and all aspiring authors): the phrase is "once IN a while" not "once AND a while". You "wander off" not "wonder off". These types of mistakes pulled me out of the book, and after a while started to make me angry every time I read them.
The only other complaint is the female protagonist; she's just too weak a character. She is supposed to be one of the best horror writers in the world, but acts like a frightened teenage girl every time something bad happens. Really???
I would love to see this book re-released after being edited, cleaned up, and improved in those areas, because the plot is a really cool idea!

I wasn't sure what to rate this, I went with 3 stars because it did hold my interest throughout the book, and I liked the characters and found them to be well developed. The premise was interesting but the end just kind of petered out for me. I was expecting a storyline more along the lines of the circumstances the characters were in would be affected by the story they were writing or something and instead it was just - I don't want to give anything away but it was a pretty weak reasoning for the entire set up of the story. Not to mention no follow up to the events that occurred on the mountain. No media attention to what happened? With a more cohesive ending/reason for plot I would bump this up to 4 stars easy. Strong start, weak ending but I did enjoy the writing enough that I will look for more by this author.

I found myself thinking about what was going to happen next. Good story but the female character was a wimp. My fávorite was the geek. I too was disappointed in the ending. But the time at the cabin.....whew....that was really good.
