4.0 out of 5 stars Guide to Flicks of the Past Decade! November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Brit author/movie reviewer Adam Smith supplies a comprehensive guide to 101 films released from 2000 to 2011 in this nicely-illustrated Rough Guides release. If you've been in a cave for the past decade, Smith's guide will provide an informative guide to a wide-ranging variety of films that graced the silver screens of movie theaters.

Among the flicks included in Smith's book are IRON MAN, AVATAR, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, THE DARK KNIGHT, THE HURT LOCKER, 3:10 TO YUMA, BOURNE SUPREMACY, THE DEPARTED, CASINO ROYALE, HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, THE HUNGER GAMES, CARNAGE, KNOCKED UP, THE KING'S SPEECH, LOST IN TRANSLATION, MILK, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, DONNIE DARKO, CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, THE ROYAL TENEBAUMS and THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Some were box-office smashes; others strictly art-house entries. Most were American productions but others were produced in France, the UK, Sweden, Japan, Germany, etc.

Each film gets a two-three page write-up summarizing the plot and providing Smith's insights into the film. Sidebars on noteworthy actors or directors attached to that flick are included for some entries. A color photograph is included for each film. Additionally, stand-alone articles on subjects like 10 directors who made their debut in the 2000s, how piracy is affecting the film industry, the declining box office draw of Hollywood stars, best/worst remakes, millenial movie flops, etc. are scattered throughout the book.

The selections found in movie guides such as this Rough Guide can be contentious. Since it's his book, Smith can call 'em the way he sees 'em but I have serious objections to films like HOSTEL, ENTER THE VOID and ICHI THE KILLER being celebrated as among "The Century's Finest Films," or so says the book's back cover.
