Right on!,
This review is from: Rough Guide to Bachata (Audio CD)
I don't own too many Rough Guide compilations cds because I am very selective when comes to purchasing compilation music in general. The selection of songs on this cd caught my attention immediately because indeed it has a line up songs that does reflect the current preferences of today's most avid bachata fans. It's a perfect mix of popular bachatas from 2003 onward with songs from pillar bachateros like Antony Santos to the softer contagious rhythms of Frank Reyes. If you are looking for a contemporary bachata cd that combines various bachata styles from contemporary Dominican artists this cd will be a treat.

An excellent and listenable collection.
Bachata, like many musical forms, is being influenced by other musical styles. This collection does not stray into the hip hop urban beat music. Thank goodness. Lovely voices, infectious guitar and rhythm.

This is a thorough, respectable and enjoyable compilation of electric bachata. Most bachata compilations are put out by artist labels, and so only have tracks by artists on the label roster, but Rough Guide to Bachata is independent and features a broader selection. The artists on this album are among bachata's best known - with the notable omission of Aventura. Although songs like Antony Santos' "Por mi timidez" and Frank Reyes' "Princesa" are true classics, one criticism of Rough Guide is that many of the tracks are not the best known ones by the particular artist.
Bachata went electric in the 1990s, and so Rough Guide's selections are all songs released in the 90s or later. For earlier, rootsier acoustic bachata, Bachata Roja: Acoustic Bachata From the Cabaret Era is an excellent choice. All in all, the music on Rough Guide to Bachata flows nicely, and it certainly makes a good introduction to electric bachata and is also a nice choice for a dance party.
