2.0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't recommend this as a guide book, January 18, 2009
By Sevag Gharibian (Waterloo, Canada) - See all my reviews

I picked up this guide for a recent trip to Berlin for New Year's 2008. To be fair, it's actually got some interesting tidbits about Berlin and its culture in there that I enjoyed reading. However, as a tourist guide, it falls way short, and here is why:

1) There is a LOT of description for each possible place to visit in the city. While you might think at first that this is good, when you're standing in the middle of the street in Berlin thinking about what you'd like to do next, you don't want to read pages of text that seem to babble on for no apparent point - you want a concise explanation of what each sight is all about and why you should visit it.

2) One thing I love about Lonely Planet guides is that for each sight's description, they immediately indicate which page the map for the sight is on, which this book doesn't. So first you've gotta guess where the corresponding map is in the book, and then you've gotta search through the map to find your destination.

3) I also didn't like the maps themselves - the city was cut up into too many separate maps, so you were stuck running back and forth between pages all the time.

I've recently traveled through large parts of India and Italy alone using Lonely Planet guides, and in all honesty, they were much better organized and concise than this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, June 29, 2009
This is a very good travel guide. I am from Berlin and got this one for a friend of mine. I have to admit that I haven't checked the accuracy of every single information on every single museum and bar, etc. But what I have read so far (some of the neighborhoods, nightlife, history, the arts, literature, movies), is very well written, concise, and highly informative. I was particularly impressed with the extensive part on the history of Berlin. The pages on the last months of the wall and the peaceful revolution in 1989/90, the reunification, and the years after are precise and - which is a great achievement - perfectly balanced, thereby giving the reader the chance to understand (with all ambiguities) what happened in Berlin in those years. (Don't get me wrong, the book is of course not on the history of the city and the chapter on its history is not crazily long. I just wanted to give an example of the book's impressive qualities. And that I chose the history chapter, has a lot to do with what Berlin's peculiarity. And that's history and all the effects one can still see and feel everywhere...)

Have fun with this book and my hometown!
