an historic look back,

This review is from: Rough Guide to the Blues (Audio CD)
It's hard to put together a comprehensive look at the blues. First their is so much material to look at and secondly there is so much repetition in the types of music under the umbrella of the Blues. This collection has some unique cuts, old favorites, and it represents a nice smattering of the real giants of the genre. Something for everyone

Thumbs up on the artists, thumbs down on song selection,

I was encouraged to bring home this CD by two things. Firstly my experience with the Rough Guide to the Delta Blues. That's a 5 star CD, hands down. Secondly the selection of artists on this CD is top notch. But the song selection is very poor in some cases. The live BB King track spends half the song introducing the band. The live Muddy track is also subpar. The RL Burnside track is one of his hip hop remixes he did late in his career to broaden his appeal at the expense of his down home roots. I don't blame RL for giving it a whirl but I do blame the Rough Guide folks for selecting the track. The Sonny Boy Williamson track is also a poor selection. These artists; RL, BB, Sonny Boy, Muddy have an incredible body of work to choose from. Whoever selected the songs for this CD did them a disservice by picking such poor examples. Look elsewhere for a classic blues compilation.

This CD is amazing. It gives a wide range of Blues, starting from the beginning. This CD will have you hopin', poppin' and boppin' before you know it. It's truly an amazing CD that I haven't put down since purchaing it weeks ago. Thanks!!!
