Charley Patton's distinctive guitar style inspired a whole tradition, the Delta Blues. The man himself was many things; a hell-raiser extraordinaire, bona fide celebrity, a wandering bluesman and a musician like no other. Most of you reading this already own versions of these songs in previous incarnations and enjoy them despite the blizzard of pops and crackles that surrounds the music caused by the rarity of these 78s and Paramount's inferior production standards. Patton is truly one of the giants of American music who was the first of great Delta performers to be recorded extensively. He also sponsored his fellow performers and helped to get their valuable music documented also. As a full time recording engineer, I know the technology of computerized noise reduction has come a long way and several new programs have come out in the past couple of years that can do amazing things with noise ridden recordings. This release is the first that I know of that reflects these developments and I think most listeners will be impressed with the increased level of intelligibility not only of Patton's lyrics but also by being able to better hear more clearly the work of his partner Willie Brown as many of these recordings were made by this duo. It is well worth a few dollars to hear these new versions even if you already own earlier CD versions of the material.

I never write reviews, but I felt obligated to warn others that this "remastered" version has tons of digital artifacts clinking and tinkling all over. While you can often hear the lyrics more clearly then other versions, I personally found it very distracting thinking that aliens had bothered to kidnap a drunken bluesman and forced him to perform on their spaceship. I have copies of some of the Yazoo versions and while they do have more noise, I don't think they are an issue anymore then can be expected. If you like this kind of music then hiss and pops are a given. While a few tracks are noticeably better then Yazoo, most tracks have a hollowed out sound to them that I can't imagine most people would enjoy or feel is any better.

It is also worth noting that the second disc is not by Patton but by other blues artists like Son House, Bukka White, Henry Sims, etc., and as such the sound quality varies from track to track. I actually liked the bonus disc more then the main disc.

If the strange sound and mislabeled second disc don't bother you, then go for it, but I'd suggest you look at the Yazoo releases first.
