Rough Guide is Right On,
By Holly A Snider (Velika Gorica,Croatia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Croatia, 1st Edition (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
I have lived outside Zagreb, Croatia, for a year and a half, and already own two travel guides for Europe that include Croatia. Neither of them do justice to this country, so it was with great skepticism that I ordered the Rough Guide to Croatia. I've read other Rough Guides which listed every nook and cranny and special fountain and cracked brick to visit, only to be severely disappointed when I got to this "marvel of ancient architecture." The Rough Guide to Croatia is fantastic! There is a great balance between what to see and the history behind it. Since I live here, I know where the places are that are listed, and now I know the interesting facts behind them.I have 4 months remaining in my job assignment here, and my Rough Guide has already gotten (and will continue to get) a workout as I travel throughout the country. If the information given about Zagreb is so incredibly accurate, then the rest of the country must be as well. I have a feeling that by the time I return to the US, my Rough Guide will be looking a little rough from all the use I'm going to get out of it!

Great for what it contains, but....,

This review is from: The Rough Guide to Croatia, 1st Edition (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
... it is not very complete. I bought this guide because my standard, the Lonely Planet guides, got such poor reviews. This book has excellent text on early history, politics, culture, recent history & the war, etc. The travel information is quite good for what is there. The problem is that less than 20% of the book covers over 90% of the country, and many of the neatest sights are not even mentioned. The proper title should be "The Rough Guide to Croatia's Adriatic Coast." I have found more information on the internet and the Freytag & Berndt maps than this book provides *EXCEPT* for what to see in Zagreb and the Adriatic coast & islands. If you are interested in visiting the inland areas, as I am, buy a map and search the internet instead. Other letdowns include poor grammar and spelling throughout, which is surprising for a book published in the UK. Very little information is provided for finding lodging in private homes, which is the cheapest and most fun way to travel. The Croatian language guide is far too short and lacking, but if you use the book for the coast & islands only, it doesn't matter. This is truly a shame because Croatia has much, much more to offer than a beach.

This book was a great help when I was planning my trip to Croatia as well as a perfect guide once I arrived. The condition of the book was perfect. A little known country explained well by this author!
