5.0 out of 5 stars Good Travel Companion
I read this book prior to traveling to Egypt and we had it with us on our trip. I used it as a reference nearly everyday, primarily for the sites. At night, I read what we would see the next day. Also, this was a very good reference when it came time to label my photos.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is completely useless
I recently got my first kindle and immediately thought it would be the ultimate travel guide replacement. (no more bulky book to carry around!) How wrong I was. The maps are completely illegible. 1.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is completely useless, December 30, 2011

I recently got my first kindle and immediately thought it would be the ultimate travel guide replacement. (no more bulky book to carry around!) How wrong I was. The maps are completely illegible. There is no way to zoom and the print is so faint and its blurred beyond reading. I even got a magnifying glass to confirm the resolution is junk. I was also unable to print the maps from my laptop using the kindle cloud reader.

Why is this important? Without the map, the location references are worthless. The translations from Arabic to English are never exact so you can't find street names easily even on google. If you can't find a street then an entire section becomes worthless. I gave up using the guide on the first day in Cairo. This book is great for background info, but as a guide you will be lost. Period.

What is so upsetting is that its easy to see there is fantastic potential for the kindle as a travel eguide. But it's not there yet. Get the paper version for another year or two or three until this medium matures.

Well written, detailed description with good pictures and maps. Would be nearly indispensible for the first time traveller to Egypt. Paul W H Tung MD

In my long experience of international travelling Rough Guides are the standard to be met, and this 2010 edition of the Egypt guide lives up to that standard. It is not totally comprehensive, but what guide book can be if it is not to be 1,000 plus pages long. It does an excellent workmanship like job, and is more than useful in the field. Thank you to rough guides.
