Book Description

September 19, 2005 Rough Guide Travel Guides
With enough heart-pumping activities, from abseiling to paragliding, as well as more relaxed outings to beaches, vineyards and museums, Cape Town easily fills an extended visit. But many, if not most, visitors venture much further east, out along the Garden Route, whose enticements include some of the best land-based whale-watching in the world, crashing seascapes, dappled forests and, at its culmination, lions and elephants in the best game reserve in the southern half of the country. The Rough Guide to Cape Town and the Garden Route is the definitive guide to Cape Town, its stunning environs (including Table Mountain, Cape Point, the Winelands and the Whale Coast) and the Garden Route all the way to Port Elizabeth and the Addo Elephant National Park.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst guidebook I've ever bought!, August 17, 2009
By
Thomas H. Riess (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Cape Town & the Garden Route 1 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) (Paperback)
I used this guide book during a two week trip to Cape Town, traveling on the garden route to Mossel Bay, and around Montagu and found it to be one of the worst guide books that I've ever used. The organization of the maps in the book was frustrating and I found it very annoying to have to page through the book to find the appropriate map that corresponded to the text I was reading. The book provides minimal information, or leaves out altogether, some towns that I found to be the high points of my trip, e.g. De Kelders and L'Aguilhas. This left me feeling that the authors hadn't visited these towns or carried out thorough research. Consequently the book is heavy on towns that are larger and rampant tourist destinations, e.g. Hermanus. My advice is to find another book to buy or rely on the internet for more up to date and comprehensive information. Hopefully a newer edition of this book will be better researched and organized, but if it's by the same authors (Tony Pinchuck & Barbara McCrea), I wouldn't buy it.
