Rough Guide Map of Ireland, August 4, 2004
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Ireland Map (Rough Guide Country/Region Map) (Map)
I bought this map while I was in Belfast in July of 2004. This map is excellent, and may prove to be the only map you'll need if you're visiting Ireland, aside from individual city maps. While asking for information at Tourist Information, my map was better than theirs. Some tourist-oriented products give short shrift to Northern Ireland, but this map does not. The water-proofing is essential in a climate like Ireland's. The map made it home in one piece-no tearing or water damage. I particularly liked its indications of historic monuments and viewpoints which are easy to find on this map if you scan for that sort of thing. The only criticism I can find of this map is a few minor misspellings. I don't think they're serious enough to get you lost. Happy travels!

Great Map, December 30, 2005
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Ireland Map (Rough Guide Country/Region Map) (Map)
The map is of good quality. It was folded in so many different ways throughout our trip, carelessly stuffed into a backpack countless times and even rained on yet is still in great condition!
Another reviewer mentioned misspellings... I'm not sure that they are necessarily "misspellings." When we went through a few of the towns, we noticed that the spellings on the signs entering and leaving were different (similar but different!)
All of the "highways" are clearly marked on the map (though not necessarily on the actual highway) and even the smallest towns that we passed through were on it. We had printed off directions to our hotel (driving from Dublin to Corofin in County Clare) before we left home but once we arrived in Dublin, we realized we had accidentally left them at home. The map that the car rental place gave us didn't even have Corofin on it but no worries since we had this map! We were able to make our way just fine. If you're planning on driving (or exploring) any of the cities, I would recommend getting city maps; this map will get you there but that's it!
If you'd like directions from city to city (such as what mapquest would give you) a good site is http://aaireland.com/routes/
Enjoy your trip!! :)

two sided map, December 31, 2006
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Ireland Map (Rough Guide Country/Region Map) (Map)
The map appears to be durable and has details.
But, the thing that I had difficulty with since only half of the country appears on either surface is there is no contiguous edge.
Trying to get distances (or directions) across the map boundry is needlessly complicated. Coming up from the south to the upper map edge and trying to continue to the north of the country means a)noting the horizontal coordinate at point of interest, b) rotating to the right and c)then looking for your coordinate at your point of crossing which is now at the bottom of the map. Far easier would have been to have the upper surface of the bottom half match up with the lower surface of the top map at the edge. Accessed by rotating top to bottom. Flip back and forth to try alternative routes. Horizontal position doesn't move.
Is this the first map that Rough has ever done?
Disappointed,
EEB
