This is titled as a New York City map, but it's really a Manhattan map because it only covers Manhattan (and a tiny bit of Brooklyn) in any decent detail. The 'Around New York' mini map section does show the surrounding boroughs, but very sparsely...only the largest roads and highways. The detail level on the main Manhattan map is adequate for getting around...no more, no less.
The main map divides southern and northern Manhattan into two adjacent sections; it's unsettling because you have to mentally put them back together to get a whole picture of Manhattan. The many closeup sections on the back are even more awkward because they are a confusingly-arranged jumble of sections taken from the main map. It would've been better to devote all that extra space into making a better, more detailed main map.
On the up-side, Rough Guide maps are one of the few that are truly waterproof. And they pinpoint many restaurants and smaller cultural establishments that other, more generic maps don't. The medium size is good for traveling, and when folded, they are much smaller than other maps.
