2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing studio recordings
I found this VERY disappointing! I was expecting some field recordings of real Gypsy music. Instead, this is primarily studio recordings of people who seem to be re-interpreting Gypsy music in a rather sterile way.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!, January 30, 2012
This review is from: Rough Guide to Music of Hungarian Gypsies (Audio CD)
This C.D. is the best world music recording I have heard in a very long time. It is a well balanced mix of slow soulful Gypsy tunes and infectious faster pieces, and is very addictive! Unfortunately I don't understand Hungarian but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of this wonderful collection. The first time I heard it I was quite lost for words! The passion and feeling in the vocals is quite palpable indeed. If these songs were studio recorded, that didn't seem to take away the essence and charm of this special folk music as can sometimes happen. I would say there is only about one song that sounds a little commercial, but even that is excellent. What more can I say? If you are new to Hungarian Gypsy, this is a perfect place to start. A lot of big names such as a band called PARNO GRASZT are on the track listing, so if you wanted you could explore their music further. Something which I certainly intend to do. I will sign off now with a WARNING: The melodies stay in your consciousness for days!
