Customer Reviews

All in all, however, this is a great book, and I completely recommend it.

I found mistakes in the LP guide and this book appears to have included this same imprecise information by using very similar expressions.

I found this version to be informative, easy to follow and very affordable.

I usually use the Lonely Planet and Frommer's guidebooks. This is the first time I tried the Rough Guide and was impressed by its user-friendliness and thoroughly researched content. The book had just the right balance of historical background, cultural awareness and practical tips. Well done to the authors' who did an outstanding job in making my trip to the Philippines truly enjoyable!!! I will definitely consult the Rough Guide for my future travels.

After reading reviews, I decided to buy this, and what a great purchase! Great book navigation and information, and since I already had the new Lonely Planet guide, I wanted to see if this would be helpful as well. Both books compliment each other, and the Rough Guide had some details or more remote areas, which is what I was hoping for.

I think I like this guide better than the Lonely Planet Guide (I have 3 editions of LP). I would highly recommend this guide.

This was my first time using 'Rough Guide'. Normally, I use 'Lonely Planet'. I found this version to be informative, easy to follow and very affordable. Very Satisfied with my purchase :)!

While it is convenient, to have an electronic guidebook on your smartphone or Kindle, this proved to be a disappointing experience. It seems like a lot of the pictures and also the maps were not included in the Ebook. The handling is not very easy and even with bookmarking things, it can be tricky when you want to quickly find something on the road.

Overall, always opt for the paperback instead of the Kindle version when buying a travel guide.

I purchased this book and the LP guide for my trip. I found mistakes in the LP guide and this book appears to have included this same imprecise information by using very similar expressions. Or perhaps the opposite happened.

I used other Rough Guide books and I was disappointed on this one. Some of the areas are organized in a hard to follow manner. For instance, in some of the islands, a neighborhood within an area has its hotels listed in the middle of the section, but then the guide goes on to list all the restaurants at the end of the section (i.e. Corong Corong in El Nido, Palawan). This is not the same with other towns. In addition, the rating system for hotels and restaurants on pricing is uncomfortable. It would be best to put the price range next to each name instead of having to flip the page back to the beginning to refresh what the codes mean.

In addition, the chapter about Manila is hard to follow. As with LP, this guide speaks too much about the capital city, leaving much information out on the rest of the islands.

Overall, LP is not good enough, but I think that purchasing both guides is an unnecessary expense. If you like checking places in advance, my suggestion is to pick one of these guides only, but be prepared to do quite a bit of research on the internet as these books are insufficient.

Incidentally, the authors appear to use the word "proper" with redundancy. The style could be improved by a good editor or proofreader.

Very comprehensive, balanced, and instructive. Lots of great recommendations and local knowledge for popular spots. Nothing beats a resident though for exploring the countryside.

There are several choices of travel guidebooks from the same publishers. No matter just about wherever your going you will find a Rough guide to....I prefer the format and style of the Rough Guide series. I just returned from my second month long trip to the out islands and recommend this guide as a starting place. When in doubt though just go.
