5.0 out of 5 stars Very well balanced
Wow! This book is so thoughful and well-balanced. The author gives both sides of the debate. From helping your community by buying locally made goods to helping the poorest of the poor in a far off corner of the globe by allowing them to enter the Western market. What kind of diet is most ethical, environmental, economical? Factory-farmed meats, organic meats, no meats...

1.0 out of 5 stars shopping book
I was very disappointed in this book. The author seemed to write all about his opinion and not use facts or real life instances.

Wow! This book is so thoughful and well-balanced. The author gives both sides of the debate. From helping your community by buying locally made goods to helping the poorest of the poor in a far off corner of the globe by allowing them to enter the Western market. What kind of diet is most ethical, environmental, economical? Factory-farmed meats, organic meats, no meats? All of the pros and cons are presented, and, most importantly, we get to decide for ourselves.
After reading this book I want to go out and buy local, organic, union-made, vegan stuff and change all my investments to socially responsible funds. I really appreciate this book.

This book is great. Did you know that Marlboro (the cigarette people) own Boca (the veggie burger people)? Of course, as you read it you start to realize that the world is full of evil companies, and it's nearly impossible to do/buy everything right. So, American Apparel doesn't use sweatshops, but their CEO has been sued over and over for sexual harassment and has been accused of exploiting women....Basically you have to weigh the pros and cons of each company you buy from, and this book gives you the tools to do it. I keep lending this book out to people and losing it. This is my third copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource, July 11, 2007
This review is from: The Rough Guide to Shopping with a Conscience 1 (Rough Guide Reference) (Paperback)
This book isn't exactly a novel. It's more or less a "resource" book. Meaning that you can turn to any section and read a few pages while you're sitting on the toilet. Which is basically how I read this book. It's the only book out of my those I've been checking out from the library that I will ultimately buy. Just because it is full of excellent resources for "shopping with a conscience". There are tons of websites . . . great articles on individual companies . . . and some good overall portraits of entire industries. Not bad for a toilet read. The only bad thing was that I usually didn't have my computer with me on the toilet to check out the links they gave.
