Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Yodeling is one of those styles about which many people have developed strong opinions while having heard relatively little of it. But with his fabulous track selections and engaging liner notes, compiler Bart Plantenga is more than equal to the task of opening ears and minds. Launching with an actual yodeling lesson from Cathy Fink, the album travels on to 17 ports of call, ranging from the western U.S. to the Swiss Alps, Africa, Mongolia, and Mexico. Somewhere amid all the excitement, the livestock gets called, Indian Bollywood musicals are further embellished (as if they needed it!), and the counter-claims of divorcing Cameroonian pygmies sorted out. And the personnel involved are far more varied than might be expected. Certainly, there are the usual Alpine field recordings, complete with chiming cowbells, but Alpendub Vs. the Man Cable's spooky, synth-and-beats-laden "Jaga Ode (Dubtronik)," hippie icon Ed Sanders's hilarious "Yodeling Robot," Gillian Welch's suitably enervated "Morphine," and Shelley Hirsch and David Weinstein's oddly church-like "Haiku Lingo" are bound to raise eyebrows as well as consciousnesses. Ultimately, although certain tracks will inevitably be hauled out strictly as parlor oddities, others will become firm favorites due to their startling beauty and/or delightful strangeness. --Christina Roden

Product Description

What is it about yodel that brings smiles and laughter? The memories of old films, mountain scenes and a hint of Alpine slapstick? From its spiritual homes in the Alps and rural USA, yodel's influence can be found in any country - from Hawaii to Cameroon - and in any type of music - from techno to Bollywood. The Rough Guide To Yodel aims to squash the clichés and invites you to open your ears to the joy of yodel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful eclectic collection of yodels from around the globe., October 18, 2006
By Terry Lyle "Yodeler" (Jamestown, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Who knew that yodeling was so diversified and global? This cd is the "sound version" of Bart Plantenga's excellent book YODEL-AY-EE-OOOO, which delves deeply and widely into the art of yodeling. The cd is an exquisite compilation of some of the most unique yodel sounds you'll ever hear. Bart includes some of his yodel philosophy in the liner notes as well a brief descriptions of each of the artists that perform. You will hear a range of yodels from country to alpine (although, in my opinion there could have been a little more alpine), Hawaian to Indian, jazz to techno and much more.
I must admit that, although I enjoyed this cd very much, it will not be on my frequent listening list. Some of the yodeling and music is too harsh for my personal taste. I suspect, though, that these yodels are the very ones that will excite those of you who think that yodelling is corny and old-fashion. This aside, I would not miss having this cd in my yodel music collection.
Highly recommended for all obsessive and daring yodel fans and for yodeling curiosty seekers.

*** I spoke too soon and find that I do, indeed, listen to this compilation over and over. The more you listen to the very "unique" yodels, the more you learn to enjoy them. For some reason I find the sound of yodeling very compelling and just can't turn away from it. This CD provides a wonderful array of yodeling styles.

5.0 out of 5 stars so glad I now own this, March 18, 2007

If you like to yodel or like the yodeling sound you will enjoy this cd. Since I purchased it and have now listened a few times, my ears are more in tune with the yodel and I can now hear yodel-like sounds coming from the tunes on my car radio that I never heard before. The cover art is fun and colorful, and the liner notes are great...you get to peek into the lives of all of the various artists. If there was ever a volume 2 to this, I would be the first in line to buy it.
