If you're only going to by one general guide book, which would you say is better. We're 1st timers to NZ, renting a car and traveling in early June. Most guidebooks focus on summer activities/places. Any advice on which guide book or general advice would be helpful

Go to and log on to the thorn tree forum and ask other travellers about their experiences. You will find out so much more from just talking to other travellers than you will from any guide book, trust me.
But take a copy of lonely planet with you as well as it won't let you down. I have travelled to New Zealand a few times now and it has served me well each time.
Enjoy your trip, I know you will, make sure you see one of the glaciers. NZ is an amazing place, I am going back in July for my 5th visit I love it so much.
