Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-9-In format, these books are similar to the "Eyewitness" series (Knopf), but with less impressive illustrative material. Here, the photos are accompanied by a cartoon on just about every other page, a questionable inclusion in factual texts. Other artwork includes reproductions and steelcut (or other media) pictures from period publications. Information in Cowboys and Homesteaders is both standard and broad, but less academic than that found in Russell Freedman's Cowboys of the Wild West (Clarion, 1985) and Pam Conrad's Prairie Visions (HarperCollins, 1991). In Prospectors, Gintzler rambles away from the topic to wander into the subject of mining. In so doing, he scants "prospecting" per se, and prospecting for gold in particular, to explain hard-rock mining, other mineral (silver, copper) mining, and mining elsewhere than in northern California. Alas, he misinforms by identifying a mine dump as "tailings" and a pit mine as a "strip mine." But his explanation of how to pan for gold is excellently detailed as are facts on life in a mining camp, "Mule Trains and Muleteers" (no mention of the prospector's burro), and ghost towns. A worthwhile set of books for any collection, but Prospectors, despite its few flaws, is the real treasure of the trio.
