5.0 out of 5 stars History at its best for collectors or students, November 26, 2002

This review is from: Round Ball to Rimfire: A History of Civil War Small Arms Ammunition, Part Two: Federal Breechloading Carbines and Rifles (Hardcover)
Dean Thomas is the best writer currently in print in the subject field of the history of US weapons and ammunition during the Revolution and through the Civil War era.He writes with the detail of a collector and the perspective of an historian. There is nothing better. The classic volume by Berk Lewis fades into limited use in the light of the series of which this is the first volume.Volume 2 is also in print and Volume 3 close behind.I can't wait.Any collector of early US weapons or ammunition or student of the period NEEDS these books. If you only look at the pictures these books are still worth the price. Dr.J.R. Crittenden Schmitt ,International Ammunition Association Life member and frequent contributor to the International Ammunition Journal and The Shotgun News.Since I wrote this review nearly two years ago vol.3 of the series has come out and vol.4 is in the works. There is still nothing better in print.Dean Thomas is certainly the "DEAN" of research into the subject. His newist book on Civil War cartridge packets is full of color photos of REAL packets and should be seen by all potential buyers of such items.
