5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Tool For The Cartridge Collector, July 2, 2008
This review is from: Round Ball to Rimfire: A History of Civil War Small Arms Ammunition (Hardcover)
That's what it is in my opinion, an indispensable tool for the collector of cartridges in general, and especially ANYONE who collects Civil War Cartridges. This volume is filled with information about the locations, methods, and often even numbers produced for a variety of muzzle-loading Long Gun cartridges. I was able to immediately identify an "unknown" paper cartridge in my collection, that had eluded all other sources. There are many good quality photographs of cartridges, along with a mountain of research that must have taken years. I will soon be ordering the 2nd Volume, so I can be as well informed about Carbine Cartridges. Stephen CSA

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Reference Work on Its Subject, March 7, 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Round Ball to Rimfire: A History of Civil War Small Arms Ammunition (Hardcover)
At present, "Round Ball to Rimfire" exists in three massive, heavily illustrated volumes covering Union small arms ammunition (at least one future volume about Confederate ammunition is planned). There scarcely appears to be any aspect to the subject that Thomas does not explore in great detail, including the invention, development, manufacture, procurement, and use of a seeming infinity of ammuntion types, for every type of shoulder arm or pistol used by Union forces during the Civil War. Often, he even reproduces the patent grants for such ammunition (and weapons). Obviously, this is not a work for the merely casual Civil War reader, but it is an unmatched resource for anyone who wishes to delve into this particular area.
