Authentic-sounding chanties,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Round Cape Horn: Traditional Songs of Sailors, Ships & the Sea (Audio CD)
If you want to know how sea chanties originally sounded on the decks and under them back in the 18th and 19th centuries, this is an album for you. It can be a time-consuming process to sort through the load of sea chanty albums out there that when you're trying to find the traditional sound. Therefore, if you like the sound of this album I also recommend the following albums, composed by various performers including some on this album: Blow the Man Down; Sailors' Songs & Sea Shanties; Shanties & Songs of the Sea. These albums have a great mix of emotion in them, from rip-roarin' drinking songs to inspirational working songs to melancholy tunes about ships that were swallowed up by the sea. Round Cape Horn generally has a more relaxed (and sometimes more sombre) tone with a couple exceptions.

authentic life at sea,
By Kip F Palmer (Hermosa Beach, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Round Cape Horn: Traditional Songs of Sailors, Ships & the Sea (Audio CD)
For the record I am no expert on sea shanties, just a life long sailor and I find that listening to this CD (which I purchased on a whim) really touches your soul with what it must have been like during the age of sail ... and my two kids 5 and 7 for some reason can't get enough of it and will play it continuously, learning a bit more of the stories contained within each time they do ...
