4.0 out of 5 stars And Now For Something Really Different, August 22, 2008
This review is from: 'Round the Corner (Audio CD)
Did you grow up watching Lawrence Welk? Remember the harpist? A beautiful blond woman in a long white gown, playing the music of the spheres.... Well, that wasn't Deborah Henson-Conant. Ms Conant's wardrobe tends more to black leather miniskirts, and as for her music....

Except for Ms Conant's title tune, "... Corner" is a set of standards. Backed only by John Lockwood's bass and Bob Gullotti on drums, Ms Conant makes the harp SWING. As UPI reviewer Ken Franckling said, Ms Conant's harp is "... a true jazz vehicle, capable of wonderful improvisations and musical coloring." You haven't heard Paul Desmond's "Take Five," until you hear Ms Conant's version, (in fact, Dave Brubeck loved it), and her 8+ minute "Over the Rainbow," with it's opening medley of tunes from the movie, will take you right to the swinging Land of Oz. Now days, Ms Conant doesn't play much jazz - and that's a shame - because she can tear the roof of the sucker when she has a mind to....

For an album that was originally recorded in 1987 using a tin can and string, or some equally utilitarian system, the sonics are surpringly good - not audiophile quality - but even if you have a top-of-the-line system, you won't have any complaints.
