This is the meaning of "COOL"!,
By P.J. Le Faucheur (Canada (ex- U.K. resident)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Round Midnight (Audio CD)
I originally bought it on vinyl back in 1973 when it was first issued. I wore out 2 copies of the vinyl and when i went back for my third copy they told me it had been deleted!!--i nearly cried all the way to my bus stop!!
I remember writing to "Fantasy Records" , begging them to release this one on CD. Well, here it is folks, and i've bought about 3 copies of it just in case they start wearing out again! Please let me state that if it's lightning speed you like in jazz guitar playing don't consider this c.d. Although Burrell CAN play at frenetic speeds (check out "BLUE LIGHTS" volumes 1 & II , or "All Day Long/All Night Long" ) this is not his aim. Burrells goal has always been to acheive feel, soulfulness and emotion and he succeeds EVERY time whereas hundreds of other guitar players fail miserably. If you are looking for a beautifully,BLUESY, relaxed setting, with plenty of gorgeous Fender Rhodes electric piano (by Joe Sample ) then this one is yours. The atmosphere Kenny creates here well matches the album title 100%! It's high quality "dinner jazz" but with a cool blues edge. If you are a rock or blues guitarist reading this review please note this is the guy who was a HUGE influence on Stevie Ray Vaughan (listen to Stevies homage to him on the track "Chitlins Con Carne" on his c.d. "The Sky is Crying"!) and Kenny Burrell influenced Hendrix as well who was noted as saying " if there's anyone i would love to sound like it would be Kenny Burrell" What drew these two rockers into Kenny's space was Burrells unique feel for the Blues. Even though he plays Blues with the sophistication and finesse of a classical guitarist Kenny still maintains a downhome, lonesome edge. Kenny, Herb Ellis and a few others are the only surviving jazz guitarists from the "old school" and constitute a direct link with Charlie Christian . Listen out for the first track " Streetcar Named Desire"...and an INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL lonesome, terrace- top setting for Johnny Mercer's " Blues In The Night". Kenny's adaptation of Randy Newmans classic "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" is soulful. "Since I Fell For You" has Kenny preaching the Blues again. You won't be disappointed if you get this CD.

The Best CD By One Jazz's Greatest Musicians,

I couldn't agree more with the other reviews written here. This is probably Kenny's best all-around recording. Every note is perfect and the mood and vibe he creates lasts from his very first statement all the way until the last note is played. Over the last twenty-five years I have listened to this recording more than any other I have ever owned. Usually over and over without stop. It really is that good. For some reason I cannot fathom it only gets a moderate review in The All Music Guide and that is a shame because that review probably has caused this recording to become somewhat overlooked. Kenny has other great records and recordings like Midnight Blue, Guitar Forms, Ellington Is Forever and the album he did with John Coltrane are classics but even they can't top this one. This is a must have recording!!! Even for those who are not hardcore jazz fans because the music on this recording is so good it can easily transcend genres.

This often overlooked CD is probably the very best all around recording of Kenny's. It's got everything! It's bluesy and beautiful and the material is very well rounded. The tune "Since I Fell For You" sounds like it could have been written for Kenny and "'Round Midnight" maybe the definitive version of an often recorded masterpiece. Buy this record. You won't regret it.

This is jazzguitarplaying when it is at it s best,,,there is no flashy arrangements just 4 muscicians playing from deep within creating beautiful music. Burrell has the blues feeling and deep rhythm combined with harmonic sophistication and the ability to set a mood with his lyricism... this is very evident in tunes like "Make Someone Happy" and " Since I fell for you"Fellow jazzguitarist Tal Farlow said on Burrell " I can spot his playing anywhere. His chord conception is wonderful and you are always aware of the harmonic movement in his work. That is particulary evident in his single line string solos..he is just one of the greats" So much for Farlow...I think that this recording is one of the very best Burrell done..it almost reaches his masterpiece "God Bless teh Child" from the year before. One little interesting thing is that the Randy Newman song "I Think it is going to rain today" was recorded by Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein 30 years later and appears on Goldings "MoonBird" I might be wrong..but I think they heard Burrells version prior to that recording.

Kenny Burrell never had the same recognition as Wes Montgomery. But this often happens with a great musician who stays true to their music and refuses to go commercial.
With selections like "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Make Someone Happy", "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", "Since I Fell For You", "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life", "Blues In The Night", and Joe Sample joining in on "Round Midnight" nothing could be more sublime! Even today as Kenny performs, his music is as brilliant as ever. As of this writing, Kenny is still going strong performing his great and soulful songs. A must-have cd for any Kenny Burrell fan.

A really nice Kenny Burrell album,

I'm a jazz guitarist and avid collector of jazz guitar albums. Most of Kenny's albums are very nice. A lot are on the bluesy side of the jazz fence. He's always a very tasteful player, gets a great tone, and always seems to maintain a deep connection to the blues. I remember one guitarist describing Kenny as spinning jazz lines that phrase like speech patterns. I believe that's true, and adds to the great warmth and humanity that his playing projects. I like this album, in particular because it has a very sultry, "after hours" kinda vibe going for it that really seems to complement Kenny. If you are interested in buying one Kenny Burrell album, this is my favorite.

A Strong Set Displaying Burrell's Melodic Style!,

This album shows the tasteful and melodic style of Kenny Burrell at his best. I've always considered him one of my favorite guitarists because of the warmth, tone and sensitivity that he displays on a ballad. This is a "quiet" guitar album which serves well as background, introspection when the mood strikes, or just appreciative listening of a guitar master. I replaced my old LP with the cd rather than copy this one because I wanted to hear every note with clarity. The pairing of electric piano and an unobtrusive yet complementary rhythm section and the selection of material makes the whole album work better than what could have been anticipated. My favorites are "A Streetcar Named Desire" and the only solo track, "Blues In The Night". A bonus for some might be his treatment of "Since I Fell For You" which became a hit of Al Jarreau's helped no doubt by the popular television series "Moonlighting" which occurred years after this recording.
This is an all too rare recording of ballads by one of the best guitarists!

Seriously, if you are into Kenny Burrell you need this album. To me it is up there with 'Midnight Blue' and some of his famous recordings with Jimmy Smith. Love it, cant recommend highly enough. I cant think of many albums you can play constantly for weeks on end and not get tired of.....this is one of them. It can sit in the background, or jump into your ears and take front seat, depending on your mood. Pretty impressed by the piano/organ sounds too, of a cat previously unknown to me...in fact, i had not heard of the other musicians on this recording, but its so good i have to dig further. It is drums, bass and guitar...with organ on some tracks, and it is nice organ. thankyou again kenny.
