Rounding It Out,
By Susan Waszak (Chattanooga, Tennessee United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Round Numbers [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Within the first 40-60 minutes of "Round Numbers" poor Judith (Kate Mulgrew) checks herself into a trendy weight spa to seek revenge on the tart she believes is having an affair with her husband. With such ridiculous lines as (paraphrased) "Binky is so important; she has spas in third world countries...China and stuff." This movie sounds like a perfect comedy to make fun of spas and the obsessiveness women have with weight, but somewhere along the line the humor takes a downfall, spiralling out of control into a serious drama about breast cancer. This quickly dampens the laughter. Then to continue with the downward spiral, poor Judith actually becomes civil to "the other woman", who turns out to be less attractive than Judith. What saves this comedy-drama is the talent of these misfit actresses. A perfect movie for an older female demographic.

This movie is hilarious and Kate Mulgrew as well as the other actresses are great in it as well. It depicts health spas in a hilarious manner. I laughed all through this and I believe that this movie is a must see for all Kate Mulgrew fans.

Great satire of fat farms,
By A Customer
This review is from: Round Numbers [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This movie is all script and no budget. Most of the cast are women character actors and they put in a lot of character into this spoof of weight-loss spas the thin-fixated lifestyle. Some swearing, no nudity, implied sex and lots of fun.

It broke my heart.,
This review is from: Round Numbers [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Being a big Kate Mulgrew fan, watching this "film" made me cry. It also made wonder why she would chose to make a film of this quality.
Round Numbers could have been an amusing movie if 1)Kate Mulgrew was really fat (which she never has been), 2)the writers would have decided whether Kate Mulgrew was playing to the audience -- as in speaking in asides to the audience -- which she does occationally, 3) if Kate was to be delivering one-liners -- zingers -- which she does in a couple of scenes or 4) she was to be melodramatic and over-act as she does on and off in the film. This film would have worked if it had been one film. Each of the characters could have blended well, but someone forgot to tell the writers. As it ended up, it was three movies -- one for each of the characters who played with (not quite with but in the film) Kate Mulgrew. Then it was four different films with Kate Mulgrew (see list above). If only the writers (and I must blame the actors too) had really thought about how to develop the relationships and the characters before they made their "quickie" film. There were some truly moving moments that could have acted as structure for the film. The setting was simply disgusting! As Kate Mulgrew's character wheels her car toward the elite spa, you see her wheel into an industrial district -- one of those old warehouse areas where moderately priced office building are sometimes built. The rooms and hallways of the entire set reminded me a paper-cardboard porn movies. "Elite", "fancy", "expensive", etc. did not inspire the design of this set. "Flimsy", "tacky", "farcical", etc. best describe what it all looked like. The story, the characters, the acting and the set all came together to exiplify one psychiatric ailment -- multiple personalities. Kate, Kate. Sometimes you break my heart. I'll keep the movie because you're in it, but I hope I will retain enough affection for you to never watch it again! |
