The Psycho-Bates mansion is a very well moulded plastic kit with very good fitting parts. No flashing on any parts to cut off, just a breeze to build with a professional finish.

The Polar Lights Bates Mansion from the movie Psycho is a true scale HO (1/87) replica of the actual house as built for the movie. The set designers captured the detail, proportions and atmosphere of an American Victorian "2nd Empire" house as would have been built c. 1860-1870. However, the set designer made a few errors, faithfully reproduced in this model, which can be easily fixed by the experienced builder, if the idea is to have a plausible house (as opposed to a strict replica of the movie set). Omissions include chimneys (none on the actual movie-set house), and unequal size window sash (horizontal bars not centered in the opening). Windows are slightly wider at the bottom than the top; this is not easily changed but is difficult to see anyway. Rear steps are rudimentary; there should be at least a covered service porch at the kitchen or side-rear door. The slanted Mansard roofs should probably have dormers, otherwise the attic is unlighted except for the single elliptical window in front. Placement of the cellar access door leading under the latticed porch is questionable, as it should probably be against the brick foundation. However, changing these things is part of the fun of semi-scratch building, and the house is highly recommended as the only available HO scale model of a house of this type that accurately captures the proportions and feel of a real Mansard-roof "mansion." Have fun, I did.

This is a great model, both for the historical value and the fact it's HO Scale. I can't wait to see it on a train set.
