In the whimsical rhyming text that follows, Schlein combines a sure knowledge of early childhood learning and the rhythms of natural speech to yield a text nicely suited for reading aloud. In addition to introducing the concepts, the book also shows that "no boy or girl or woman or man or fish in the water or beast on the land or bird in the air is ever exactly round or square." Bronson's illustrations are stylized to emphasize the circular and squarish aspects of the people, animals, and objects that fairly skip across the pages. Some paintings are compromised by overly thick outlining and jarring color, but they illuminate the text nicely and will prompt children to look for the shapes on the page as well as in things in the everyday world.
