Book Description

October 1983
The bawdy and moving story of two contemporary bronco busters, The Rounders, originally published in 1960, was Max Evans's first novel and is still his best known work, thanks largely to the success of the 1965 movie version starring Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford. Acclaimed for its realistic depiction of modern cowboying and for its humor, it is also a very serious work, described by the author as a tragicomedy.

Looking forward to reading this book after seeing the PBS show on Taos and Max Evans. It sounded light hearted. And it was made into a movie.

I just loved this story, short but complete with a look at western experience on the range without the usual shoot outs and Indians. I really got a sense of the cowboy and the hardships even though these characters were part of a more contemporary ranch. Max Evans is an extraordinary story teller and even more special in that it is a reflection of his time on working cattle ranches in the Southwest. What a beautiful literary style and makes reading more enjoyable with his humor. Anyone who loves our western history and the cowboy culture should read this poignant and often hilarious tale. I especially loved the Forward that gives in detail how this novelette came into being and eventually became a movie with Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford. Very interesting. You gotta love Old Fooler, the horse, who is "no ones fool" as it turns out. He almost takes on "human" qualities!" This is a fun story for younger readers too- teenagers. It's the kind of book you don't want to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story of the cowboy lives on, even though it's not the same as it used to be, October 16, 2010
This review is from: The Rounders (Paperback)
The story of the cowboy lives on, even though it's not the same as it used to be. "The Rounders" Is a reprint of the acclaimed novel that was later turned into a major motion picture. With plenty of humor, author Max Evans hoped that the story would also be known for its depictions of the life of the modern cowboy and his role in today's society. "The Rounders" is an intriguing read and a very highly recommended one, not to be missed.
