5.0 out of 5 stars Second Ed. EZ66 GUIDE
I read these reviews before buying this guide. They were all glowing except Mr. Walker saying that he wanted more information on what to see. Then I read dozens more great reviews on the first EZ guide.

I figured, it's a good chance this guy was confused. And after getting the guide, I could tell he was. He must not have read what it is. It is to make it easy...

3.0 out of 5 stars EZ66 review
I think this is a good idea for a book, and the author gives alot of detail but not enough. Sometimes the directions are a little confusing. But over all I am glad I purchased this book, and it will be used.

I figured, it's a good chance this guy was confused. And after getting the guide, I could tell he was. He must not have read what it is. It is to make it easy for you to find the difficult to find old route not to give you places to stay or eat, supermarkets, locations of gas stations or anything else. Yes it does include some high points but give us a break! Walker should have bought the Dining & Lodging Guide and Adventure Handbook.

What a great guide!! My dad sure could've used this book while "exploring" Rte 66 when I was a kid. He would have known where to stop and how far in between all those great little towns...So much great information in a convenient take along size, whether in a car or on motorcycle. Easy to read maps and loaded with american history...
Don't miss out on this wonderful easy to follow guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best, October 11, 2009

We started our Route 66 road trip with a couple of other guides and did not discover this one until the second day. It's tempting to do the first day over again!

The great strengths:

1. The trip is broken up into strip maps that are about 75 miles long. Each map shows all the relevant freeway exits and the places where Route 66 has merged with I40. It's very easy t0 stay on the old road.

2. Each strip takes up one page and is then broken into four or five one-page segments of descriptive text that tell you exactly when and where to turn to stay on 66 and what to look for along the way. Where words are not enough, he includes thumbnail micro-maps that make the twists and turns crystal-clear.

3. His descriptions of what to see are a good mix of fact and expansion.

4. He includes optional side-trips to abandoned sections of old Route 666 that are both challenging and interesting.

A feature I can't evaluate is his provision of west-to-east directions for those traveling against the grain.

One minor quirk in his turn-by-turn directions is that he often does not provide the distance between turns. When a couple of turns happen in quick succession, it's an act of faith at first to drive a mile or two to reach the next named turn.

We had started the trip with the "Route 66 Traveler's Guide" whose maps were very weak and whose driving directions were almost non-existent (3 out of 5) and the "Route 66 Quick Reference Encyclopedia" which was absolutely worthless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn by Turn excellence, September 29, 2009

Just completed the Rt 66 trip from Santa Monica to Chicago. West to East is cool because all the traffic is going the other way! This is the only book we could find that would give us direction from west to east - and those directions were turn by turn.

At times, the different versions of Rt 66 could be confusing, but it is good to have options, and this guide gave detailed options.

The book also did a nice job of calling out sights, attractions, etc. that you'd see in that segment. Clearly this book was written by a Rt 66 expert.

This book is the bible for driving Rt 66. Don't know how anyone could do it without these detailed directions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide, January 13, 2010
This review is from: Route 66: EZ66 GUIDE For Travelers - 2nd Edition (Spiral-bound)
We did the entire route from Chicago to Los Angeles and without this guide, I am sure that we would have missed many of the great stopping points. In fact, we probably would have missed most of "Route 66", since it is not always marked well. There were a couple of times that we missed the turns and had to retrace our drive by a short distance, but when you consider how long the route is, that is very insignificant.

One thing we found was that you want to read the guide before you get to the site/place. There was one place that he suggested you do not stop and we did not read it until after we stopped and he was completely accurate in what he said.

We highly recommend this guide to anyone that is planning on driving on the authentic "Route 66".

5.0 out of 5 stars Route 66 Made Easy!, August 21, 2009

This review is from: Route 66: EZ66 GUIDE For Travelers - 2nd Edition (Spiral-bound)
When I first tried to follow Route 66 in the mid-1990s the only guide books were confusing, incomplete, and hard to use. Jerry used the shortcomings of the early guide books to create one that was easy and fun to use. The book has thorough directions for finding the road, the maps are artistically pleasing and accurate, the directions are written separately for eastbound and westbound travel, and the spiral binding makes it easy to use for an unaccompanied driver. The book is just what the beginner road warrior needs to find the road. He does not attempt to thoroughly cover every possible thing to see along the way -- other sources have that information -- but he provides plenty of ideas anyway. He even includes a number of old-time car games that used to amuse youngsters in days gone by but can still be enjoyed today. Even though I can now follow most of the road from memory, I still find plenty of information to enhance my journeys from Jerry's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential guide for traveling Route 66, December 31, 2010

This review is from: Route 66: EZ66 GUIDE For Travelers - 2nd Edition (Spiral-bound)
My husband and I drove Route 66 from Saint Louis to Arcadia, OK at the beginning of September 2010 - taking several Route 66 guide books with us that we'd purchased off of Amazon. We ended up only using Jerry's EZ Route 66 guide book and the map set. This guide was the perfect companion for our trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone who plans to travel Route 66. Jerry has taken all of his expertise gained from years of experience traveling along Route 66 and laid it out in a way that makes it easy to navigate your way along the Route. His guide also points out all the interesting things to see and do along the way. There is so much in his book that we would have missed if we had relied solely on other guides. Thanks Jerry for writing this book - the great experience we had traveling Route 66 this past summer wouldn't have been possible without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only guide you'll need, November 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Route 66: EZ66 GUIDE For Travelers - 2nd Edition (Spiral-bound)
Just finished traveling Route 66 November 12-22, 2010. This guide was invaluable. Do not know what we would have done without it. Easy to follow directions and very manageable format. Even met with the author at his studio in Oklahoma, where he autographed our book (he gives his number in the guide to call). Would highly recommend also ordering the Here it is! Route 66 Map Series along with the book. The map series gives you the entire route for each state at a glance, where the guidebook only gives you sections at a time.
