Book Description

May 15, 2005
Route 66 was the iconic highway of twentieth-century America, stretching from Chicago and Chicago and the Mississippi River basin to Los Angeles and the Pacific coast, and it connected Americans not only physically but also culturally as an enduring symbol found in classic songs, films, television, and pop art. Arthur Krim explores here the fascinating and complex symbolism behind the famous roadway in this vibrantly illustrated and innovative study.

Route 66 traces the iconography of U.S. Highway 66 first as an idea, then as a fact, and finally as a symbol in American culture. Krim chronicles the history of Route 66 as part of a larger plan to conquer and settle the Native American lands of the Great Plains and Southwest. While the antecedents of Route 66 are to be found in the wagon trails and railroad routes of the nineteenth century, the construction of Route 66 in the twentieth century ushered in the revolutionary era of the modern highway and automobile travel.

Krim looks at how the highway transcended its gravel and concrete physicality to become a metaphor for the American spirit of exploration and democratic freedom. He draws on a wealth of examples to examine how Route 66 evolved through each generation, from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath to Bobby Troup's carefree "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" to the anger and alienation of Jack Kerouac's On the Road. Combining history and metaphor, literature and images, Krim explores how Route 66 compressed disparate events and cultural ideas into the treasured national memory that the road is now.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Route 66 is a scholarly tour de force. No other book comes close to establishing just what the road''s ''roots'' really are. It should stand for years as the definitive voice regarding Route 66 and its physical and social origins."—John A. Jakle, coauthor of The Gas Station in America and Lots of Parking: Land Use in a Car Culture

(John Jakle 20060601)

"The road is gone, but it will hardly be forgotten—thanks, in part, to the author''s labors. Since Mr. Krim delves into the historical at the expense of the breezy, some casual readers may find the amount of detail daunting, but others will be grateful for it. And the book will almost certainly be embraced by another group: future historians who seek a single-volume chronicle of the most famous stretch of highway in the U.S."—Wall Street Journal

(Brock Yates Wall Street Journal 20060901)

"One of the finest histories of the Mother Road. . . . Wonderful period photos . . . as well as old postcard shots and maps add to the overall feel of this history of the Road. Route 66 is a must read for any Roadie wishing to learn how Route 66 became a national—if not world—icon. Krim has done an admirable job in covering details and history, while maintaining a writing stye that allows the reader to move effortlessly and never, for a moment, feel bogged down in a boring tome."—Route 66 Magazine

(Route 66 Magazine 20070405)

"Krim persuasively makes his case as he studies Route 66''s origins, realization, and transformation into cultural icon. . . . Arthur Krim''s comprehensive and thorough book makes a very fine contribution to the study of Route 66 and American culture. The book is cleanly written and Krim''s enthusiasm for his subject always keeps interesting what might otherwise risk becoming dry material."--Steinbeck Studies

(J. B. Jackson Prize )

"The author superbly presents the history behind the facts and images of Route 66. . . . With a highly readable narrative enriched by many good maps and excellent photographs, Krim effectively demonstrates why the words ''Route 66'' are ''a generic symbol of the American road with great power both at home and abroad.'' There is much of value to the cultural geographer and all others interested in American symbols. . . . Arthur Krim provides a wonderful reminder of symbolic Route 66 to one who has traveled the highway, and a marvelous introduction to any one planning on doing so."--Journal of Cultural Geography

(David E. Kromm Journal of Cultural Geography )

"An excellent selection of illustrations and contemporary maps. Well-researched and clearly written, [the book] effectively depicts the enduring association of Route 66 with adventure, escape, and yearning to start life anew."
(Rudi Volti Technology and Culture )

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Finally Here, June 30, 2006

This review is from: Route 66: Iconography of the American Highway (Hardcover)
Those of us deeply connected to Route 66 know that Arthur Krim is one of the road's best kept secrets. He has spent decades engaging in meticulous research of the highway's origins and of the songs, films, and social / cultural impact it has had on our society. Simply put, this man is the John Steinbeck of Route 66 history, and anyone interested in vintage highways should consider this as fundamental to their library as a physician would a book on anatomy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book about Rte 66, September 30, 2006
This review is from: Route 66: Iconography of the American Highway (Hardcover)
This is the best book about Route 66 that I've come across. The many informative maps, vintage photos and smooth writing style of the author make it extremely interesting and enjoyable reading. The book is full of little gems connecting folks like Louie Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Chuck Berry, Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Jack Kerouac, John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie, et al, to Route 66. Clearly, Dr. Krim has done a thorough (deep and broad) historical investigation of this world-renown icon and written a superb book that I am thrilled to have in my collection.

This book is not an interesting read, more like a revision of a pHd thesis. I liked the pictures.
