5.0 out of 5 stars TUNE IN to GREAT TUNES!
Three cheers for EMI for finally putting these two albums out on CD for all to enjoy. Nelson Riddle's TV Theme versions were really hot when they were released on vinyl. Since then, an ocassional song has been released here and there, but here are both albums complete in pristine sound as well. 3.0 out of 5 stars Nice but NOT the original
This collection of TV Themes songs is composed of rather well done versions done by this band and composer. They are NOT the versions you heard when you saw the show, however.

Three cheers for EMI for finally putting these two albums out on CD for all to enjoy. Nelson Riddle's TV Theme versions were really hot when they were released on vinyl. Since then, an ocassional song has been released here and there, but here are both albums complete in pristine sound as well. This CD is worth its weight in gold for the rip-roarin' version Nelson and the gang lays down of The DICK VAN DYKE Theme, if for no other reason. There are of course about 20 other reasons including the themes from THE ALVIN SHOW, the LUCY Show, and THE BALLAD OF JED CLAMPETT. TV fans of all ages will delight in and enjoy this long overdue collection of some of TV's greatest theme songs, done by one of Hollywood's most fantastic arrangers.
Hope to see more of Nelson's albums represented in this fashion by the good people at EMI. Very nice packaging including all original liner notes as well. Great CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic big band arrangements, June 17, 2004
By
Malcolm D McPhee (Western Australia) - See all my reviews
Embodies all the excitement of the 60's TV shows. Nelson Riddle and his band of top musicians can still can stand along side todays TV and movie music creators with colour and richness of sound that is often assisted by digital enhancement today.
Top marks for releasing both LP albums on a single CD, my original 33rpm records can now be put into retirement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 2-fer of jazzy arrangements of TV themes, June 28, 2005
Though only four of these are Nelson originals ("Route 66 Theme" "The Untouchables" "Theme From Sam Benedict" and "New Naked City Theme"), the maestro puts his stamp on every track through his inventive, signature arrangements. Highlights include swinging charts for "The Alvin Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," Latin beats for "My Three Sons" and "The Lucy Show," the Bert Kaempfert styled "The Defenders Theme," and a fine light-jazz take on "Supercar." Two great albums, brought together on one extraordinary CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music and Arrangements, September 23, 2006
I listen to alot of different styles and types of music. I have a pretty large music library. This collection is one of my top 3 favorites. The Nelson Riddles don't come along very often. Due to their time frame most all of these tracks are only a little over two minutes in length. Every time I listen Nelson leaves me begging for more of each track.Even if you don't think that you will like this collection, take my word for it. YOU WILL......Lightfoot

1.0 out of 5 stars This ain't it...., April 22, 2008
I wanted this album for the Untouchables and Naked City and I can tell you without reservation that these are NOT original themes.Knock offs maybe for someone desperate, but not the TV shows original themes. Give a listen to the sampler, then decide.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Missed by this much....", October 18, 2011

I agree with others.....It was fun listening to these ole theme tunes, but unfortunately they are not the "originals" as played with the broadcast episodes that many of us took pleasure watching and listening to in the 50's and 60's. These are apparently after-market, all-in-one studio orchestral recordings.

I think most of us were hoping for all of the originals to be compiled into this album.

There are sections, as in Route 66, that the lead electric guitar is almost grating as compared to the TV original that came across much more orchestral (strings if I remember correctly).

Still I'm happy to add it to my eclectic collection of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best TV theme albums ever!, July 23, 2011

This 2002 EMI two-fer CD, containing two albums recorded by Nelson Riddle in 1962, ROUTE 66 AND OTHER GREAT TV THEMES and its sequel, MORE HIT TV THEMES, is one of the finest TV theme music collections available. Riddle applies his own style on all 24 tracks, from the obscure ("Supercar," which was a kiddie show from the early '60s that I did not remember) to his hit recordings of "The Untouchables," the "Route 66 Theme" itself, and the "old" and "new" versions of "Naked City" (the first written by Nelson's good friend Billy May, the second by Riddle himself). Only Henry Mancini's PETER GUNN albums come close.
