This was an exceptional buy! I've enjoyed it over and over again, looking at the pictures of the "OLD HIGHWAY". Brings back memories. I suggest it to everyone!

The photography and the caption writing in this book are the best -- very well documented and researched. But I would have liked to see more maps of various Route 66 alignments and more of the history of building and traveling the highway itself. Still, the book is worth the money. I'm glad that I bought it.

I love all the images of America series. Living on route 66 I found this book particulary interesting, and I gathered info not previously known to me. For anyone whose traveled the Mother Road or wants to, this book is a must have.

The book waxes strongly of nostalgia. The photos depict a largely vanished Americana. The scenes along the Route vary widely. From the rural sections of the California hinterland around Barstow to where it passes through Los Angeles.

But one striking aspect is that portions are still relatively unchanged from how they were decades ago. Certainly, in the countryside, this might be of little surprise. But even in parts of the Route in LA. We see how the Route has been largely bypassed by freeways. Which has contributed to a dimunition in traffic along the Route. Ironically, this has helped preserve some of the buildings and neighbourhoods. As in South Pasadena. There is a slight twinge of architectural decay and somnolence.

This book brings together some information and photographs of old U.S. 66 in California, including the termination of the highway at Lincoln and Olympic Blvds. where it gives way to U.S. 101. For fans of old U.S. 66 this would be a welcome addition to a growing body of work about the old road.
