About the Author

Diane Teare is a professional in the networking, training, project management, and e-learning fields. She has more than 25 years of experience in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting network hardware and software, and has been involved in teaching, course design, and project management. She has extensive knowledge of network design and routing technologies, and is an instructor with one of the largest authorized Cisco Learning Partners. She was the director of e-learning for the same company, where she was responsible for planning and supporting all the company’s e-learning offerings in Canada, including Cisco courses. Diane has a bachelor’s degree in applied science in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in applied science in management science. She currently holds her Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP), and Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications. She co-authored the Cisco Press titles Designing Cisco Network Service Architectures (ARCH), Second Edition; Campus Network Design Fundamentals; the three editions of Authorized Self-Study Guide Building Scalable Cisco Internetworks (BSCI); and Building Scalable Cisco Networks. Richard E. Froom, CCIE No. 5102, attended Clemson University where he majored in computer engineering. While attending Clemson, Richard held positions at different times for the university network team, IBM, and Scientific Research Corporation. After graduation, Richard joined Cisco. Richard’s first role within Cisco was as a TAC engineer supporting Cisco Catalyst switches. After several years in the TAC, Richard moved into a testing role supporting Cisco MDS and SAN technologies. In 2009, Richard moved into the Enhanced Customer Aligned Testing Services (ECATS) organization within Cisco as a test manager of a team focused on testing customer deployments of UCS and Nexus.

 

Balaji Sivasubramanian is a product line manager in the Cloud Services and Switching Technology Group focusing on upcoming products in the cloud services and Data Center virtualization area. Before this role, Balaji was a senior product manager for the Catalyst 6500 switches product line, where he successfully launched the Virtual Switching System (VSS) technology worldwide. He started his Cisco career in Cisco Technical Assistant Center working in the LAN switching products and technologies. Balaji has been a speaker at various industry events such as Cisco Live and VMworld. Balaji has a Master of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of Arizona and a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical and electronics from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University (India).

 

Erum Frahim, CCIE No. 7549, is a technical leader working for Enhanced Customer Aligned Testing Services (ECATS) at Cisco. In her current role, Erum is leading efforts to test Datacenter solutions for several Cisco high-profile customers. Prior to this, Erum managed the Nexus platform escalation group and served as a team lead for Datacenter SAN Test lab under the Cisco Datacenter Business Unit. Erum joined Cisco in 2000 as a technical support engineer. Erum has a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology and also holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from NED University, Karachi Pakistan. Erum also authors articles in CertificationMagazine and Cisco.com.

 

Amir Ranjbar, CCIE No. 8669, is a Certified Cisco Systems Instructor and an internetworking consultant. Operating under his own corporation, AMIRACAN Inc., Amir offers his training services to Global Knowledge Network, his consulting expertise to a variety of clients (mainly Internet service providers), and his technical writing skills to Cisco Press. Born in Tehran, Iran, Amir immigrated to Canada in 1983 at the age of 16 and completed his Master’s degree in knowledge-based systems (a branch in AI) in 1991. This is a review of one specific book out of the library, the "Implementing Cisco Switched Networks (SWITCH) Foundation Learning Guide".
This book is poorly written and so full of errors that I find it hard to believe Cisco Press would put their name on it. It appears that it was written by a non-native-English speaker and no one took the time to correct basic grammar and syntax. On top of that much of the information is flat out wrong. One example out of many that I could reference, in the chapter 6 discussion of 802.1X there is a statement in parenthesis, which I'm assuming means it's important, "The port that the client is attached to is the supplicant [client] in the 802.1X specification.) A quick review of RFC 3580 has this to say about the supplicant:
"A Supplicant is an entity that is being authenticated by an
Authenticator. The Supplicant may be connected to the
Authenticator at one end of a point-to-point LAN segment or
802.11 wireless link."
That's just one glaring example of flat out mis-information. There are also multiple wrong review questions.
It appears the book was thrown together in a hurry with no quality control. I wish I had saved my money and bought a more accurate book. Hopefully the other books in the series or the Certifcation Guides will be better written.

Cisco boooks are cisco books. I have no complaints regarding this purchase! They shipped in great condition and in a timely manner. Definitely thorough reading for networking guys/gals.
