2.0 out of 5 stars No Hyperlinks!!!
I have the hardback version and I absolutely love it! The only book I like more is "Interconnections" by Radia Perlman. The two books are a must for any network engineer.
However, the Kindle version was a real disappointment because Cisco Press didn't enable hyperlinks in the table of contents which caused me great pain. The search feature worked however I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Routing TCP/IP Volume I, June 3, 2000
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
I've just finished reading Jeff Doyle's "Routing TCP/IP Volume I" book and feel confident that I can now pass the CCIE lab in the near future. His presentation of TCP/IP IGP routing protocols is very clear and concise, with a perspective and insight into internetworking which is rarely encountered. This edition combines introductory, historical, conceptual and practical materials, and RFC's, with a first rate writing ability into one scintillating package.

The chapter on OSPF was particularly satisfying going into the depth where the next step would be research into the protocol. Having said that there is a very pragmatic side to this book including configuration examples within the text as well as configuration and troubleshooting exercises and review questions at the end of the relevant chapters.

By leaving nothing on IGP's out and all the while remaining emminently readable, this book marks a very welcome and refreshing addition to the internetworking literature and will no doubt become known as a seminal work. I truly appreciate what I have learnt from this book, and am very much looking forward to the publication of Jeff's next work on EGP's, in Volume II, in July.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Networking Ref I've Seen!, November 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
As an CCIE, I found this book is very informative and very accurate. It disects the details of the routing protocol, including IS-IS. How many books out there do you see that talk about IS-IS? If you want to gain basic and advance about default route, static routing, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, ISIS, this is the bible for you. With Sam Halibi's book and this book, you will probably solidfy your preparation for CCIE lab test. Of course, with lots and lost of hands on practice. But you need these two books for practicing! Good luck!

p.s. I just wished I had these books when I was studying for my CCIE. It would save me lots of time!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is the HOLY man's BIBLE..You must GET it...!, November 3, 1999
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
What this book did for me was strengthen my knowledge and understanding about network routing protocols. I've been searching for a book such as this one, with such detailed information about routing metrics, EIGRP DUAL, OSPF/RIP router redistribution, etc... Now when I go on interviews, I'm more confident than every before. There are a certain number of books that I call the BIBLE which means never go to work without them,(#1-Doug Comer TCP/IP Volume-1, #2-Mark Miller Troubleshooting TCP/IP, #3-Kennedy Clark & kevin Hamilton Cisco Lan Switching,) just to name a few, and now added to that list is Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Volume-1.

What is Jeff Doyles email address, the one listed does not work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For CCIE Candidates, August 22, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
Having just successfully written the CCIE Written exam today, I can honestly say that I probably wouldn't have without this book, and I have an excellent foundation for the lab work ahead.

I won't repeat what others have said, but I would strongly recommend this book for those working on their CCNP as well, particularly for ACRC. This book would have helped illuminate a great number of topics from that tough course. Very impressive work and I am sure I will be wearing out the spine in the years ahead. Thanks, Jeff!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites but it wasn't in the beginning, December 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
I picked up this book on several recommendations before I was a CCNA and never got far with it. Since then, I have become a CCNA and maintain a network using Cisco equipment. Recently, I blew the dust off the book and could not put it down. It's written like a novel and is fun to read. There's a small troubleshooting example in the static routing section that is written like a murder mystery. Why can't the client connect? If you're an absolute beginner you probably won't like this book. But if you're a CCNA or have equivalent knowledge you will be hard-pressed to find a better written book.

After getting my CCNA, I was looking for a book to help me prepare for the CCNP. This book does just that! It presents everything is a logical order and builds from that. This one is definitely a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars a MUST read!, March 22, 2001
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
This book is the best! Read it, do all the exercises, then re-read it again... I absolutely GUARANTEE you'll have an incredible *real-world* grasp of routing protocols after going through this text. Mr. Doyle is no doubt one of the finest authors of technical literature to date. His common sense approach to explaining difficult concepts is hardly matched by anything I've read thus far. I can hardly wait for volume II to come out in April! I've recommended this book to everyone I know in the tech. field, and now I'll broaden that recommendation to YOU! Get it, read it, know it! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point, November 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
When it came down to researching routing protocols for some training courses the company I work for is developing, Jeff Doyle provided the perfect starting point. In this book, he uses simple language (well, as simple as the computer world can be) and clear-cut definitions that won't leave your mind spinning. Read this book before you read any other material related to routing protocols (including the RFCs). Once you've read it, you will be able to sift through the disorganized information found in most technical books and (especially) in the RFCs. You may not even necessarily need to read any other supplementary material (Doyle is thorough in his analysis of each routing protocol). Although it is a cliche' statement - I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterful Book on Routing in the Cisco Environment, March 23, 2005
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
Routing TCP/IP Volume 1 by Jeff Doyle (ISBN 1578700418) is an advanced level book on the theory and practice of routing and its implementation in Cisco routers. The 1026-page book (with a 50+ page index - always an important part of any technical book) is packed with useful information, example network architectures, and sample commands and their corresponding outputs to help the reader get a thorough grasp of real-life application of the theory.

The book is meant for working professionals in the network and routing field. Part I presents some basic routing theory along with the routing types - static and dynamic. This section, as in other books, is meant as a review for those seasoned engineers who have been working in the field for some time. It also helps to bring up to speed the other readers who may lack the necessary background. Part II contains the real substance of the book. It covers the interior routing protocols in detail including RIP 1 & 2, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF, and IS-IS. The material presented in these chapters is definitely solid enough to give a detailed understanding of the subject matter and provide the necessary knowledge to allow one to troubleshoot the problems that creep up in maintaining networks running these routing protocols. Part III presents the issue relating to the optimization of networks running these routing protocols such as filtering and redistribution. Part IV consists of the appendices.

The most useful part of the book in my opinion is the examples and sample outputs. These really help the reader to understand the details on implementing the concepts presented in the book. Jeff presents a sample network architecture and uses that architecture to explain various aspects of the topic being discussed. For example, to illustrate various aspects of EIGRP routing and load balancing, a 5-router mesh architecture is presented followed by a detailed discussion of concepts such as succession, load sharing, route transitions and updates, etc. This approach really helps in understanding all aspects of a particular topic with concrete examples to relate to.

I took hold of this book not to help in preparing for the CCIE but to assist in the understanding of routing protocols that I use in my work life. As such, I can not comment on the applicability of this book to preparing for the CCIE exam but as for its application to real world scenarios, this book far exceeds any other on the topic of routing in the Cisco environment.

I am really impressed with the material presented in this book. The book is thorough and detailed in its coverage of interior routing protocols. Jeff Doyle is an expert in his field and this book proves it. On a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest, I give an enthusiastic 5 to Routing TCP/IP Volume 1 by Jeff Doyle. I can't wait to get my hands on Volume II.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed, easy to understand, strongly conceptual, April 14, 2002
By
"enyamada" (ATTLA, Sao Paulo, Brasil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Routing TCP/IP Volume I (CCIE Professional Development) (Hardcover)
This book is excellent, not only for those who are pursuing a CCIE certificate, but for everybody who works/wants to work with routing and really wants to understand what's happening behind the IOS commands.

This book is strongly conceptual without being boring -- even non Cisco users will understand and love the book. At the same time, it's very practical (with lots of cases and troubleshooting sessions) without being shallow, as we usually find in other certification books.

Doyle made things like OSPF almost easy. Without a doubt, one of the best Cisco books I ever read.
