A joy for the soul as well as the palette,
By
This review is from: Roux Memories: A Cajun-Creole Love Story with Recipes (Paperback)
I just received my copy of Roux Memories. What a treat! My 90-year-old mother was born in New Orleans and has fond memories of living there. She also has a fascination with great food. These two subjects enjoy a perfect marriage from Belinda's pen. I am giving the book to mom for Christmas and can hardly wait to see her expression when she opens it. I am sure she will be revisiting her childhood once she is lost in the great stories snuggled within these pages. I anticipate many exciting "mother-daughter" conversations sprinkled with southern stories of her own as she is reacquainted with her roots through Roux Memories. I strongly recommend this book to anyone wanting to experience the joy of Cajun cooking in their own home. The stories could be a book in themselves and Belinda has blended them to make the recipes that much more appealing. A joy for the eyes, the soul and the palette!

What a joy to review this book! Be sure you have some time to enjoy yourself when you open Belinda Hulin's Cajun-Creole Roux Memories because you won't be able to put it down. So much more than a cookbook, it's a memoir, a trip to another culture, a love story and yes, recipes. And what recipes! You don't have to be Cajun to fall in love!
Brimming with vignettes, pictures, history, and recipes to suit every palette, it's a wonderful addition to any library, kitchen, cozy nook or backyard hammock. The kind of book they call a wonderful read. Hulin deserves a public service award for rescuing recipes that barely escaped being washed away by Katrina. It was a painstaking task to record the ones from her mother's recipe box and then she spent hours recreating the ones that weren't down on paper. They're on paper now though, complete with measurements and the proper ingredients. The result is a gift to posterity. Roux Memories tops my list for gifts to friends and family this Christmas. Do yourself a favor and put it on yours too.

I happened to find this at my local library by chance and checked it out...and couldn't put it down. I carried it everywhere, mesmerized by the stories, photos, and recipes. Growing up in Southwestern Louisiana the entire book just resonated with me and brought back so many memories. The recipes are so spot on to what I grew up eating, some I know how to cook and some I don't. I've since purchased my own copy and have used several recipes. I still carry it around the house, I think my husband thinks I'm nuts. LOL!

Paula Dean, I love you, but move over--Roux Memories is a lucious memoir cookbook!,

When I make a dish I want to know something about its history, and Belinda Hulin's Roux Memories offers a sumptous serving of Louisiana memories and delectable downhome recipes that honestly, will make your knees buckle as you take bite after bite while standing at the alter--(stove) before you ever manage get to get these fabulous dishes to your family table.
I'm not from New Orleans, but I adore Cajun and Creole food--the spice, the depth--the way salt and seafood manage to infuse your palate with every bite. Her stories will endear you to this region and to the family who bestowed her with such comforting and masterful Southern recipes. You'll feel as if you're rght there, passing heaping bowls of Chicken Pontalba Crabmeat au Gratin, scooping a spoon of fresh butter beans, a compliment of chow chow, and feasting on Galette du Roi, King Cake divine. You'll feel the ample laps of grandmothers as grandbabies get passed by loving arms, conversations that flow like sweet tea and neighbors stopping by to add their own gifts to the table. Family folklore, tales of falling in love, of funeral processions, and the rich and textured townlife with an array of colorful characters and the best eating on the planet. One other very helpful aspect of this book are the "Louisiana Lingo" sections which explain Cajun and Creole terms for those of us who don't know the different between a roux and a remoulade or our cracklins from our crawfish cornbread. And know you've been dying for a frog's leg recipe... Paula Deen, I love you girl, but move over and make room for Belinda Hulin and her to-die-for memoir cookbook, Roux Memories, A Cajun-Creole Love Story with Recipes. You'll find Louisiana Love between every single page.

Roux Memories,
This review is from: Roux Memories: A Cajun-Creole Love Story with Recipes (Paperback)
As a New Orleans native who left the area and returned a few years ago (twenty five years later), Roux Memories brought back many childhood memories and gave me tools to create new food memories. The foods I remember as well as a few new ones are here. Many of Ms. Hulin's family pictures and memories sound as though they are my own -- a loving family and lots of characters make for happy memories.
If you love food and family, you should buy this book!

I saw this book while visiting Slidell, LA. They wanted to much for it and I got it off Amazon for less than half price. This book is chock full of a Creole family history that was affected by hurricane Katrina. What they were able to salvage, they put together in this book. Finally, I am able to get a secret recipe some mom's favorite dishes. The left over turkey gumbo is excellent. I love the creole words and phrases used and their meanings. If you like the flare of N.O. style cooking then this book is a must. These are recipes that are past down from several generations. Of all the cook books that I own, this is no doubt my favorite book. Hey, go get dis book an giv it to ur nanan on her birtday. She'll luv you for it.

What's great about Belinda's book is that the writing is just as great as the recipes she shares! By weaving her life in New Orleans and some entertaining family stories with some wonderful Cajun recipes, you'll enjoy the read as well. Its the first cookbook I've ever seen that interpolates the two so seemlessly. So if you love to read, and love to cook, this is the book for you.
