Classic Rover history highly recommended, September 16, 2005
This review is from: Rover P4 (Crowood Autoclassics) (Hardcover)
The first new post-war Rover, the P4, caused a sensation when it was introduced in 1949, and remained in production for 15 years.
James Taylor, who has established himself as a Rover expert, tells its story. As usual, Taylor discusses the company's history, as well as the P4's development in great detail. One of the original Cyclops models graces the front cover, and the mere fact that one was found in mint condition, tells its own story.
Throughout the P4's production life, the company introduced so many models with different nomenclatures that it is virtually impossible to keep up. Nobody would be surprised if Taylor would get confused, but at least he tries to make some sense of all this. Still, the P4's history is not as easy to recall as that of its P5 and P6 successors. The coulour charts of each model year, both of paintwork and upholstery, is also included. One thing of which there is no doubt, is the origin of the Auntie nickname, which is discussed in detail.
A very interesting chapter is the one about the P4-based prototypes that did not see production. The most influential of these is the Road Rover, which must have inspired the development and introduction of the Range Rover. This kind of information is perhaps irrelevant to most people, but for those who want to learn about the P4's history, it is essential.
One omission is a chapter on purchase and maintenance. Taylor says that this was a deliberate decision, because the history of the car is so comprehensive that there would not be space for anything like it. For those who would like to restore a P4, this information is important, but for the rest, its omission is nothing to worry about.
This book is highly recommended to anybody who loves this classic range of Rovers.
