1.0 out of 5 stars A Golden Opportunity Lost!, October 21, 1998

This review is from: Land Rover Discovery & Range Rover Classic: 1970-96: Step-by-Step Service Guide (Porter Manuals) (Paperback)
Given the number of Discoveries and Range Rover Classics in service and the arguably very high percentage of owners who perform their own maintenance, there must exist a very large market for a book which is a collation and presention of maintenance tips and repair methods and which goes beyond the elementary basics, and offers more detail and anecdotal advice than the various workshop manuals. This book, unfortunately, is not it. It wimps out before offering anything other than the barest first steps in many of the repair projects it describes. For example, under the section describing changing the automatic transmission filter, the advice given may be summed up as "Don't". Most every seasoned maintainer has done this task at least once, and those others, who would purchase such a book, would, no doubt, very much like to know what the job entails.

The title 'Step by Step' would be better stated as 'Elementary First Steps'. Overall, a bitter disappointment!

The title of this book is "Service Guide and Onwer's Manual"; it is NOT a shop manual. The shop manuals cost close to... What you get when buying this title is an intermediary between your owner's manual (useless) and the Ranger Rover Shop Guide (useless in the wrong hands). It describes what you need to do and how often. In cases where it is reasonable for a non-professional mechanic, it explains how to do it. Expect to find detailed-enough descriptions of how to change various bushings, brake pads, and other "simpler" tasks like that.

If you have minimum mechanical skills, you'll get enough information to help you keep your Rover from failing due to neglect. Interspersed with the step-by-step directions are plenty of warnings that might trip up the dilettante. Experienced owners who know enough to perform their own 24K mile transmission servicing (that requires frame spreading), don't need this book.

For the rest of us who just want to save a few bucks and learn more about their vehicle along the way, this book tells you what to do and at what time/mileage intervals. You get enough information to prevent the major, costly failures.

Owners of used Rovers (Discos 89-96 and Classics 70-96 are supported) should get this book to get the high level view of what they need to do to keep their truck going. At less than the cost of a tank of gas it's a pretty good deal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Service GUIDE, not Manual., December 17, 2002

This book is what it says it is - a 'Service Guide'. This, of course, is no shop manual. If you're looking for some basics for preventative maintenance, this is it. If you're a frequent off-roader, get the shop manual or visit [website] for their online forum and step-by-step proceedures (plug, plug!).

Both books listed are by haynes, one states they don't ship internationally, however you may negotiate this(it may just be the shipping cost is greater internationally)...
