Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS–Iza Trapani's book (Charlesbridge, 1994) is packaged with a CD in which the words are both sung and read. After a greeting from the author, Trapani and a child sing each verse in the book, accompanied by piano, guitar, percussion, and other instruments played softly. Finally, Valerie Stephens reads each verse in the book in a sweet, gentle voice, accompanied by both music and page-turn signals. The CD can be used as either a lullaby to lull children to sleep or as a read-along to help them improve their reading skills. This read-along package will be a welcome addition to most libraries.–Beverly Bixler, San Antonio Public Library, TX

From Library Journal

PreSchool-Gr-1-Clever additional verses make this classic song splendidly unique. With soft watercolors, Trapani depicts a cuddly bear family and pet pup on a boat excursion. They start off leisurely in bright sunshine but soon encounter fallen oars, rapids, and a beaver dam. Stopping for a picnic lunch, they enjoy their meal with all of the forest animals who are "Chomping, snacking, slurping, smacking/What a noisy bunch!" Returning to the boat, they run into bad weather and hurry back to shore. "Raining, hailing, wind is wailing/Hear the thunder roar!" Children will enjoy the rhyming, alliterative language energized by strings of gerunds. Every original verse perfectly matches the traditional melody, and each picture illustrates the action with warmth, excitement, and humor. The music with all of the verses is printed on the last page. Trapani has transformed a simple little song into a delightful adventure.

More About the Author

In 1961, when I was seven years old, my mother and I came to America. My father, sister, brother and paternal grandmother all stayed behind in the tiny apartment in Warsaw, Poland where the six of us had lived. Under Communist rule entire families were prohibited from traveling abroad so my mother took me, the youngest, hoping to bring the rest of the family over soon thereafter. Tragically, she died before fulfilling her dream. My father died a few years later. Due to extenuating circumstances I was unable to return to Poland and twenty-seven years passed before I was reunited with my siblings. I spent three and a half years in a Catholic Children's Home and then, after completing High School, moved to the Hudson River Valley in upstate New York.
In the ensuing years I worked as a nanny, short-order cook and waitress while studying Art at the State University in New Paltz. After graduation I worked in various capacities - as a rock climbing guide, real estate broker, caterer and freelance illustrator. But all along I had one dream - a dream I held onto since I was a child - to make picture books. My portfolio bulged with art for children and I just hoped for that lucky break.
The break came one day in 1990 as I rode my mountain bike and a turtle crossed the trail in front of me. The serendipitous encounter inspired a poem which led to the publication of my first book, What Am I? An Animal Guessing Game.
My career blossomed with the release of The Itsy Bitsy Spider, an extension of the original rhyme, which is still going strong after an amazing nineteen years. Positive response from early educators encouraged me to retell and illustrate more nursery rhymes, and I am delighted that my books are used in schools nationwide and abroad.
I have always loved children's literature - from the wacky brilliance of Dr. Seuss to the timeless, love-filled classics of Margaret Wise Brown and a slew of others in between. The combination of engaging text and enchanting illustrations has always been an irresistible package, fascinating me all my life. As a child I spent hours immersed in the magical world of picture books. As an adult I try to re-create some of that magic for others to enjoy.
Looking back on my childhood in Poland, I feel that I owe my family gratitude for fostering a creative environment in our home and for instilling in me a love for books, language, art and music. For the brief time that I knew my parents their encouragement left a lasting impression and contributed greatly to the realization of my lifelong dream.

Word to the wise: I like everything about this book except that Amazon's description of the product indicated it (the paperback version) would be packaged with an accompanying CD. I did order the paperback; however, no CD was included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids Love These Books, December 9, 1999
By A Customer
I have purchased almost all of the books written and beautifully illustrated by Iza Trapani for my numerous neices and nephews. They are loved by the kids as well as their parents. They particularly like Row Row Row Your Boat, which is the newest book in the collection. We anxiously await Ms. Trapani's next book!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Row, Row, Row Your Boat (Paperback)
My mom is a librarian now after nearly 30 years of teaching Kindergarten (five of which were spent teaching 1st thru 3rd grade). She does the story times at her library. She recommended these books to me for our two year-old daughter. Our daughter knows and loves these songs and the artwork is simply unmatched in Trapani books. You will not be disappointed with any of her books. Promise.
