Amazon.com Review

It's a rare combat flight sim that can be all things to all people, but Battle of Britain comes close. The designers set out to model the entire pivotal WWII conflict and succeeded admirably, creating some of the best flight models and visuals this genre has ever seen. With all the realism options turned off, it's basically reduced to the level of an arcade game, but with those same options enabled, even the most jaded virtual pilots will have their hands full. This is the kind of simulation that lets players manually tweak the pitch of their propellers, and makes players deal with issues like carbureted vs. fuel-injected engines, engine torque, and blackouts from pulling too many g's.

The designers certainly didn't focus on minute details at the expense of Battle of Britain's strategic possibilities. The game engine is capable of throwing hundreds of planes in the air at once, and it simulates raids whether they are part your particular mission or not. It's possible to take off with the intention of intercepting a small flight of Stuka dive-bombers only to end up responding to a massive raid of heavy bombers attacking a town miles away. Few games give the player such a sense of playing a bit part on the stage of battle.

That's not to say the gamers' actions and input are inconsequential. Battle of Britain also comes with a campaign mode that lets players make strategic decisions as either the British or the Germans. As the British players, receive reports on incoming raids and apportion your meager resources to effectively meet each threat. German commanders get to deal with the problem of assigning fighter escorts to the bombers, knowing that the fighters can't spend more than 20 minutes over enemy soil because of fuel limitations. Those are just a few of the situations players face. It's also possible to jump into any plane in the campaign mode to play out a mission in the simulation mode. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Masterful combination of cerebral strategic campaign mode and adrenaline-charged simulation mode
  • Excellent flight models
  • Beautiful terrain and buildings
Cons:
  • High-quality visuals require a lot of computing horsepower
  • Sound effects could be better
  • Steep system requirments
  • Some users report frequent system-crashing bugs

1.0 out of 5 stars They Could've Tested It Before Releasing It, February 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rowan's Battle of Britain (CD-ROM)
I purchased this game for my Dad (who's a pretty savvy computer user in his own right), based upon our mutual enjoyment of Rowan's "Mig Alley". This game WON'T install, we can't uninstall it, and to add insult to injury, Mig Alley now crashes when we try to run it (so there's obviously some kind of heinous conflict going here).

Just another case of a game, delayed ad infinitum, and finally foisted on the public so that we, having paid full retail, can debug it for the developer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Battle of Britian scores a hit!, June 17, 2001

Don't believe the reviewers that say the game doesn't work. I found that to be true at first. Then I went to the Talonsoft webpage and downloaded FAQ and patch. The patch wasn't needed, but the FAQ clued me in that my machine's settings were way too low. Beware, you will need a higher end machine--1078X840 whatever, is required at minimum to run the game. Resetting to that solved all the problems and man does the game run smooth. Lots of planes in the air, chatter, and gorgeous graphics.

I don't usually like flight sims. I have a hard time with them. So, the ability to lock out "true" aerodynamics is a must for me to enjoy it. B-o-B has a "novice" setting that allows this, yet keeps the unique nature of the planes a game factor. Brit planes stall out in dives (no fuel injectors), Germans don't (injected). You can also set the various settings for unlimited ammo vs. limited, backout, whiteouts (glare)etc. The views take a bit getting used to (can see why that Mustang bubble top is a big plus later in the war) and that is why I don't usually like flight sims; but this one is functional completely from the joystick. A ten button joystick is best but my 8 button works fine (but no airbrake, dang).

I like the game alot. I like Red Baron 3d but did not like Rowan's other game I bought (Mig Alley). Guess I just like prop action--a little slower than jets.

But don't be lulled--those Spitfires and Focke Wulfs really move!

Don't hesitate to buy this one--just be sure to get the FAQ from Talonsoft's website (and the patch if you have graphic cards problems)

5.0 out of 5 stars Rowan's Battle of Britain, February 5, 2002
This review is from: Rowan's Battle of Britain (CD-ROM)
If you are a fan of the period, you ought to try this....

BoB realistically recreates England and the huge scale of events of the Summer of 1940 in full authenticity. There is no other title that allows you to manage an entire airfleet (Luftwaffe) or the whole of RAF figher command, and then jump into the cockpit of your Spit or Hurri to face over 200 enemy aircraft. The attention to detail is stunning, and since the game's source code has now been released it is now being developed and continues to mature.

Once you have it running it is quite unique.

Superb.
