This is the most awesome iron I have ever owned! I absolutely am in love with it! I admit that I held off ordering it because I always hesitate when there are no reviews on an item. That, plus the price---$140.00. I've never owned an iron that expensive but have always bought Rowenta irons. My previous iron is the Rowenta "Professional Luxe" and I have had it for at least 8 or 9 years; possibly more than that. For the past several months though, it kept shutting itself off while I was using it. I would have to give it a good whack to make it turn back on again. Shaking it did not work. I got tired of that; plus it made ironing really tedious. So I reviewed several of the newer Rowenta models here on Amazon and in Consumer Reports.
I decided on this model...the DW9280U1 because of all the features and I love the way it looks; the color is awesome, though does not have anything to do with the function.
I read the brochure that came with it and it says to use just plain tap water and to be sure to empty the iron out when done ironing. I never did that with the old model; but then I don't remember reading in that brochure to do so.
As soon as you plug the iron in, and choose the type of fabric you need to iron, the fabric chosen begins to blink and continues to blink until the right temperature is reached. Then, as you begin ironing, I was so impressed...the iron just glided over the fabric; no dragging, no spitting whatsoever from the iron at all! I thought it would spit a little but it did not. The brochure also said that a slight odor and smoke might be detected during the first few uses; but I noticed none at all. The soleplate has 400 holes and look out when you press the steam button!

There is a "tldr" paragraph at the end of this review!

I use my iron a lot more than most people, almost daily, because I make garments and quilts. I've gone through a lot of irons and I know that there are big differences between them. The most expensive ones aren't always the best, and earlier Rowentas I've had haven't lived up to their cost, either in performance or longevity. I was using a Sunbeam when I had the opportunity to try this one. I used it to press seam allowances on quilt blocks and to iron large pieces of cotton fabric.

The Rowenta DW9280 is a heavy iron. Whether you like a heavy iron is personal preference. I used to think more weight was better, but I don't think so any more. You still have to bear down on an iron, and so the difference in the actual weight in my opinion is inconsequential to performance. It isn't inconsequential to your wrist, though, and after a long day of using the iron it becomes tiresome.

The cord on this iron measures 96" from base of iron to the wall when plugged in, about the same as the Sunbeam. The iron uses plain tap water for steam, and advises against using distilled, demineralized, or rain water, among others.

The stainless steel sole-plate glides smoothly over the fabric. The iron heats up quickly. However, after eight minutes of inactivity it shuts off. The directions say that a "gentle shake" will turn it back on. I've found that a shake does nothing. You must lay the iron down on the ironing board with a little thump to get it going again. The auto-off feature is a mixed blessing. It's good for those of us who are absent-minded enough to walk away without unplugging the iron.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Update - 3/13: Star rating unchanged.
I have used the Rowenta on a regular basis for about 8 weeks. I have gotten used to the weight and the steam power remains unchanged even without a single cleaning cycle - I did shift to distilled water after the first 3 weeks. There are no leaks, but I still get water on my ironing board....thanks to the the dark blue window that makes determining the level impossible.

Happy overall!

*~*~*~*

The Rowenta DW9280 Steam Force Steam Iron meets most of my requirements for an iron. An iron should have:
* Enough heat (wattage) and steam to work cotton and linen fabrics
* Sufficient steam-on-demand - and steam burst should not cool down the iron too quickly
* Smooth glide
* Have no leaks during ironing and when stored

The Rowenta has about 2 times the water capacity of my daily grinder - the Panasonic NI-S650TR 1200-Watt Steam Iron with Curved Titanium-Coated Soleplate. However, as the Rowenta produces a lot more steam than the Panasonic, you only get the about 25% more steam (about 1 cotton shirt worth) from the Rowenta. The 1800 W iron gets to `Linen' hot in about a minute - pretty fast for an iron. My 1200 W daily grinder takes about a minute and a half. The approx. 20 sq. inch soleplate is about 25% larger than a standard iron (like the regular Panasonics, Proctor Silex, Black & Decker, etc) and has steam jets right up to the "Precision Shot" tip. The stainless steel soleplate glides effortlessly and is much smoother than any stainless steel iron I have used in the past and as smooth as a non-stick coating.
