Hefty iron, sturdy power cord,
By ThirdShift (Las Vegas, NV) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rowenta DM890 Commercial Professional Iron (Kitchen)
I had previously owned a Rowenta P2 commercial iron, which appeared to be an early incarnation of the 890DM. There were reports of the power cord going bad due to the design, and I think that's how my P2 died. The iron would suddenly stop heating, sometime a whack on the bottom would bring it back, but it was very unpredicatable. An internal fraying of the power cord connector would explain this behavior: no current draw to the heating elements.
With the 890DM Rowenta appeared to have fixed this, evident by the thicker power cord that so many people complained about. It is a hefty cord, about 9-10mm in diameter, more like a computer power cable than your typical household appliance power cord. It still connects at the base of the handle through a flexible plastic tubing that keeps the cord straight up and away from the handle. I have not found this cable to be a nuisance in ironing, and if this design change prevents an early Rowenta death, I'm all for it. Everything else is as excellent as ever, Rowenta owners can atest to this. The DM890 weighs nearly 5 lbs., making it efforless to glide and not have to press down. Inox steel prevents bottom stickage, the handle steam control buttons are well-designed. It heats up fast and can get really really hot at 1750W. In the $90 - $100 price range this is one of the most expensive irons you can buy. The only thing I had before my P2 was a small Black & Decker, so I don't have extensive experience to compare. I can say that once I've owned a Rowenta, that's it, I'll never go back to buying anything else, even if my old P2 did die early.

If you're looking for a heavy grade professional iron that will glide over your clothes knocking out all your wrinkles, this is the iron. This iron has reduced my ironing time by at least 30-40%. The easy gliding ability of this iron topped with it's ability to smooth out those wrinkles in usually one pass without constant pressure or repeated passes over the same area make this a true pleasure to use. The only one area of concern that seems to bother others but didn't concern me is the power cord is fairly heavy grade, making is different from probably your current iron, however it hasn't presented any obstacles for me.

This is a Great Iron,

The steam produced by this iron doesn't leave anything to be desired. I really like the features and the quality of this appliancve. The steam feature is excellent for all fabrics and it goes fast where you have to easily refill it for any large amount of ironing at one time. A really "Professional" Professional Iron. You will not be sorry if you purchased one.

I WORK AT A RENTAL COMPANY, WHERE WE IRON TABLELINENS FOR RENT. WE PURCHASED 3 OF THESE, AND SO FAR WE HAVE HAD TO SEND BACK 2 OF THEM AT LEAST TWICE. THEY QUIT HEATING,AND THEY LEAK WATER BADLY ON THE LINENS. I WOULD NOT RECOMEND THIS IRON FOR ANYTHING.

Good weight, steaming function a joke - not worth the $$$,

This iron does a slightly better than average job of ironing than other irons in the 25-40 dollar range.
This is more than likely to do with its weight and the amount of steam that is released during the ironing process (face down). However, it is by no means what I would consider professional quality. I decided to save money by laundering my own dress shirts for work and using this iron but again - it only produces results that are slightly better than the average iron. I would purchase this product if you have to iron shirts for casual work setting and don't need to look overly polished and crisp. Also, buy if you don't care that the stainless steel button will be scratched (its not the coated non-stick, non-scratch surface). If you are expecting anything close to the results cleaners produce, look at another product. The same goes if you wanted to "steam" your curtains or relax wrinkles by using the vertical steam shot. That "functionality" should be removed from the packaging (since the steam shot is a doctored photo and very misleading). I highly doubt it could release a wrinkle from any fabric. I tried it on my wool pants and a slightly wrinkled cotton t-shirt and I think I heard them giggle. Save your money and buy a Panasonic iron for less than 50 dollars and a water squirt bottle at the dollar store. Push down a little harder than normal and you will have the same results.

Still problems with the cord,
This review is from: Rowenta DM890 Commercial Professional Iron (Kitchen)
We bought our DM890 a little over six months ago and thought it was a fine product in terms of effectiveness in ironing. What seemed weird was how the heavy duty cord would become so easily twisted. Last week the twisting became too much for the wiring to bear and the iron shorted out. The cord actually popped (mini explosion if you will) with a slow flame coming out of where the rupture occurred. It was sort of like a burning fuse.
Anyway, a check of the warranty shows that it was only good against defects for six months. My wife wanted to try taking it back to Target where we bought it, but I suspect she will have little luck. If the manufacturer is only going to guarantee it for six months, I suspect Target will not be obligated to do anything. For a "professional" model and for the higher price we paid, I would have expected much better.

Lasted only 2 months,

I too have a DM890 that I am fed up with! I bought it two months ago and it started leaking large amounts of water all over my clothes. I then discovered that there is a loose connection at the swivel cord that causes the iron to stop heating. Unacceptable for such an expensive iron.
I previously had a lower level Rowenta and decided to replace it when that one started leaking water. I thought maybe the "professional" would be better. I came online today to research whether to simply replace this with the same model - don't think I will be doing that!

Heavy and Hot--just what I wanted,

This was the third iron I've owned in about two years. The other ones broke and were not what I wanted.
I wanted an iron that was heavy and, above all, hot. This iron is all that. Hotter than my other two Rowentas, and it can smooth out wrinkles in 100% cotton no problem. The reservoir is a little smaller than some others, but I'd gladly make the tradeoff. Not too many bells and whistles with this one. But if you just want a HOT iron that is heavier than some, this is the one.

Love the way this iron works,

This iron does a great job. I read previous reviews that had complained about the heavy cord. It does have a heavy cord, but I found a way to manage it. I previously owned a Rowenta and loved it too. After a couple of years it had a burning smell and quit. Maybe that is why Rowenta went to the heavier cord. My sister visited over the holidays and used my iron. She now plans to get one.

Rowanta new iron to replace the Rowenta,
By
This review is from: Rowenta DM890 Commercial Professional Iron (Kitchen)
Rowenta DM890 Steam Iron. Up until now it was a fine iron. Seldom used as I send most of my shirts/slacks for professional cleaning. It dribbled some water from time to time, but I could live with that since I seldom used it.
My folks are visiting for a while and my mother began using the iron. A loud pop sounded and sparks shot from the base of the cord. Thanks goodness she was standing near the iron when this happened and immediately unplugged it. (I usually leave the room while the iron is heating up.) I paid lots of money for this iron feeling you get what you pay for. I was wrong and will now be more diligent about reading consumer reviews. I'm glad I had a stand-by Black & Decker that I've owned for about 10 years that works great. Rowenta will do nothing but refer me to a repair service which will cost nearly half as much as the iron did when new plus shipping costs and hassles. I'm going to keep checking for a product recall as I feel this iron should be recalled due to similar complaints of quite a few others. |
