I was a little nervous about the posts that gigged this particular Rowenta iron.. my lightweight Black & Decker has been with me awhile, and although it does a "decent" job of ironing it was a hassle in terms of the number of steam vents and the amount of time I had to spend on items to get them really looking decent. I just stated using this iron and I'm really disappointed. Ironing at the maximum setting with the iron real hot and using bottle water produced continuous and incredibly annoying dripping. The dripping still occurred with the steam off. Running the iron through the cleaning cycle didn't help either. The cleaning mechanism is pretty awkward as well, you have to hold a...

Because of the few lukewarm reviews on the $49 Rowena DX1700 iron, I decided to purchase it from my local Target (same price) because if it didn't out-perform my current iron, I was definitely planning to return it. Amazon is great in that respect.. being able to print a label, etc., but it meant a trip 4 cold blocks to the Post Office, and waiting for a credit to my account, etc. Target, on the other hand, is a short bus ride away and could instantly reverse the purchase.

I am really surprised! Honestly, this iron is phenomenal.. I don't do this kind of stuff for a living, so those of you who quilt/sew/press on a regular basis may have different standards; but because this so effortlessly took out wrinkles without any "pushing", I decided to do my whole wardrobe, which includes, by the way, a number of lightweight, 100% linen jackets. I couldn't believe my eyes.. there was a post about having to refill the water chamber more than once, but just isn't an issue for me as long as the job gets done fast and well.

If some of the stuff you love to wear is sitting in your sack of un-ironed favorites, and you don't wear it often because you can only wear it once before it needs another "iron-job", for pity's sake, order this guy. In a very small way, it will CHANGE one aspect of your life. I really can't say that much about most purchases!

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets, March 23, 2006
This review is from: Rowenta DX1700 1600 Watt Effective Iron (Kitchen)
This rowenta is the best. I have had a Rowenta for years and it finally died on me.(after 20 years) Needless to say this new one outshines the old one. Lighter and irons like a dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS, June 21, 2006
This review is from: Rowenta DX1700 1600 Watt Effective Iron (Kitchen)
I just got though ironing 5 pairs of linen slacks. I was going to bring them to the dry cleaners to press becuase I couldn't get the wrinkles out to wear to work. I dreaded spending the money on that. I figured I would give the iron a shot. In one second I flet the difference, I had a beautiful professional looking crease, with one swipe on linen and with steam. I gave the pockets and xtra burst of steam, and I was done, like a handkerchief, I didn't want to stop, and I hate to iron. You can not go wrong with this item.

I just stated using this iron and I'm really disappointed. Ironing at the maximum setting with the iron real hot and using bottle water produced continuous and incredibly annoying dripping. The dripping still occurred with the steam off. Running the iron through the cleaning cycle didn't help either. The cleaning mechanism is pretty awkward as well, you have to hold a little lever for 1 minute in order to activate the cleaning cycle. If it wasn't for the dripping, it gets hot enough, glides nicely, and I could live being a little inconvenienced while cleaning it. I was expecting better quality from Rowenta, especially after all the positive reports.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved this iron, only one fault, November 9, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rowenta DX1700 1600 Watt Effective Iron (Kitchen)
This iron glides so smoothly more than any iron I've ever used. I do a lot of quilting and it works beautifully. The only fault I see is the cord placement, where it goes into the iron. It's smack in the spot when you go to set the iron upright on the ironing board. I looked at my old iron and this cord, is placed off to the right or left side. The Rowenta is in the middle and I hit that everytime I place the iron in upright or rest position. It takes a fair amount of water but that's not a problem for me. Would have given it a 5 star if not for the cord in my way.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY (made in China), June 23, 2008

This review is from: Rowenta DX1700 1600 Watt Effective Iron (Kitchen)
Purchased this iron after I dropped my wife's old Rowenta and broke the handle. It constantly leaves brown spots on the steam setting. Doesn't matter what kind of water is used, or ANYTHING else their web site says. Took it apart, cleaned the "innerds", etc. STILL leaves nasty brown water spots on the clothes. Don't even think about using the "shot of steam" setting. Then I happen to notice that this particular iron was made in China. Yes, China, not Germany. Have a good friend who has a Phd in materials engineering and he stated that it is the "cheap" metal used in the water tank. It reacts to the water and leaves spots. AND I DON'T CARE WHAT KIND OF WATER YOU USE. Nothing you could do about it, except to use it as a dry iron he said. Have checked other Rowenta models and found the "made in Germany" decal on them, but this particular model that I got had "made in China". A nice "made in China" decal was stamped on the bottom. Junk.Never thought that this fine company would prositute its name for the junk produced in China, but it did. I threw it away after my wife ruined an expensive blouse. BEWARE, and don't say you were not warned if you purchase one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money., June 18, 2008

I was very disappointed with this iron. After using it for only 6 months, it now decides when it wants to shut off (even while I'm using it) and no amount of shaking will turn it back on. Water doesn't just leak out of the iron, it floods and leaves stains on whatever I'm ironing. This happens no matter whether it's full or nearly empty. Sure wish I still had the receipt.

I bought this iron after my Sunbeam went belly-up.The blast of steam is really a "blast". The soleplate is smooth and slick. Watch out, the dial may be hot after extended use.

I love my new Rowenta Iron. It is slightly heavier than my previous Rowenta (which I had for 20 years), and I like that. It requires a bit less of my own pressure. The large water tank is great, as are the extra steam and spray features. Rowentas are great irons!
