1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS IRON!
I have had a terrible experience with this iron and I see many others have had similar problems. I had to send it back for repairs only one month after I bought it. It over-heated, melted the fabric, started smoking, and was obviously not usable. I wanted a replacement because it was so new, but Rowenta refused. I should have just sent it back for a refund and then...

This is the best iron I have ever used. It literally irons in half the time compared to my old Black and Decker. I am a seamster and have seen an improvement in my work since I began setting stitches and pressing seams with the Advancer Iron. The burst of steam feature knocks out tough wrinkles and is really helpful with stubborn seams. It is not heavy, but it is heavier than my previous irons, so it really makes pressing fabric easy. The narrow tip is a great feature! It fits like a dream in trouble places. I used it while constructing a coat and the narrow tip allowed access to the most difficult areas.

The one down side is the automatic shut off feature. It will shut off in 8 minutes if left vertically, in 30 seconds if left on its soleplate. I would prefer if this feature were optional.

The Advancer is formulated to work with tap water, not distilled. But for those of us with an excess of organic matter in our tap water, the tap water may be diluted with 50% bottled water (per the instructions) for excellent results.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS IRON!, January 10, 2008
This review is from: Rowenta DZ9080 Advancer Iron (Kitchen)
I have had a terrible experience with this iron and I see many others have had similar problems. I had to send it back for repairs only one month after I bought it. It over-heated, melted the fabric, started smoking, and was obviously not usable. I wanted a replacement because it was so new, but Rowenta refused. I should have just sent it back for a refund and then started over again. Their repair service keeps it for 30 days before they even begin to repair it. The repair shop was quite rude when I called to check on it after 3 weeks...as if I was annoying them. They never even notified me that they received it. After spending $130 on the iron, I had expected a better customer service from a company that is supposed to carry a quality product. WRONG! I sent it using UPS two day (they don't pay the cost of returns/repairs even if under warranty) After 31 days, they returned it by regular mail...took 3 more weeks to arrive. I was really annoyed.

Last night (3 weeks after repair) it over heated again, worse than before. I had to run it outside and it burned for nearly an hour, pouring out smoke and reeking of burning plastic. I thought it was going to burst into flames. Called Rowenta this morning, they still won't replace it! They want me to once again send it in for repairs AT MY EXPENSE!!! I live in Hawaii so shipping is quite expensive. I asked to speak with a manager (as I did before). He was "not available" and he is supposed to call me back. Its been 2 hours, no call. I will be calling the Better Business Bureau next.

Please read all 1,2, and 3 star reviews. This is not a new problem. Something is seriously wrong with this product. It is also a really, really heavy and cumbersome iron. You slso have to fill it with water after each garment. Very user un-friendly.

Something is seriously wrong with Rowenta. Where is the quality control? What happened to customer service? Save yourself the money and the hassle...buy a cheaper iron.

This iron is a technological marvel. I have just had it for a few days and I have ironed some very difficult, over 100 year, heirloom open-embroidered linen. It was a breeze and the results were truly professional. The controlls are easy to use, the steam settings excellent. It just glides over those diffucult spots. It may be a little pricey, but it is worth every penny.

This is an ideal tool for anyone who sews on home fabrics. The upright steam feature is a plus. I was concerned about the weight, but the iron glides so effortlesly that you do not notice the weight.

DO NOT BUY THIS IRON!!! Auto shut off never worked and the first iron quit heating in two weeks. I returned it and got another one and the same thing happened within a few weeks. Like other posters here have said Rowenta has terrible customer service.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT HAPPY, November 23, 2007
This review is from: Rowenta DZ9080 Advancer Iron (Kitchen)
PURCHASED THIS PRODUCT ON OCT 11. lESS THAN A MONTH LATER IT REFUSED TO WARM UP. WAITED 30 MIN'S FOR A SERVICE REP TO COME ON THE LINE. RETURN AUTHORIZATION WAS FAXED AND A SHIPPING LABEL WAS PROMISED BUT AFTER A WEEK HAS YET TO SHOW UP. IT MAY BE A GOOD PRODUCT BUT I EXPECTED BETTER. A GOOD REPUTATION IS EASILY LOST.

1.0 out of 5 stars Auto Shutoff Didn't work on two irons, November 29, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rowenta DZ9080 Advancer Iron (Kitchen)
The first iron I received had no documentation (obviously a return) or paperwork and the auto shutoff didn't work. I returned it, and to Amazon's credit, I had a new iron less than 24 hours after I completed the return online. However, the second iron (at least this one had paperwork) the auto shutoff didn't work. After filling out the second return, Amazon said the problem is more widespread than they thought and wouldn't be sending a new iron. Did a refund instead. I will say I liked the iron for what little I got to use it. It is heavy though.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Performand and Poor Customer Service, December 28, 2007

This product has been a complete disappointment. We wanted a really high quality iron and thought that by paying $130 for one we would be assured of that. We were wrong. After using the iron for one month, we had the same overheating issues that the other reviewers had and then the iron would no longer heat up. We took it to the service center in Oceanside, NY and were told it was the heating element and would take 2 to 3 weeks to repair. After 4 weeks we had not heard anything from the service center and when we called them they said there were still waiting for the part from Rowenta. They said they would not call Rowenta to see when the part was expected to be shipped, but we could call if we wished. The customer service people at Rowenta were quite friendly and apologetic. They said that we would be sent a new iron but it would take 4 to 6 weeks since the iron was being shipped all the way from New Jersey. I live two states away and could walk to NJ and back in less time, but I decided to give it a shot. We just received our "new" iron yesterday. The nose of the iron is completely bent and it is clear that this was not a new iron. Once again I called Rowenta and they said to send it back to them and it would be replaced by a new iron. I am not sure how this is going to all play out, but rest assured it is the last product which I will buy from Rowenta.

1.0 out of 5 stars Warranty warning, December 6, 2007
This review is from: Rowenta DZ9080 Advancer Iron (Kitchen)
Although I really liked the iron and its performance for the first 6 months, I am now experiencing a run-around from Rowenta's warranty center after the iron simply stopped heating. The warranty period is one year. I have talked to very friendly people on the phone at Rowenta national, but the actual service center (for the eastern half of the U.S.) does not respond to any communication, even though the national people say I will get a response within 7-10 days after receipt of the iron. They have had my iron for 6 weeks with no response to communication and no satisfaction. Given the poor action on warranty problems, I cannot recommend this iron to anyone. I have now read other reviews and see that my iron did the EXACT same thing as severeal others here: overheated WAY to far (burning things), then stopped heating at all. I suspect there is a design flaw in addition to a service flaw. Perhaps they are swamped with broken irons?!

I am in the process of returning this iron...again. On the first iron, the auto shutoff didn't work which I could have lived with, but then it developed problems turning on - it took at least 10 minutes before it turned on properly. I exchanged it for another DZ9080 because, when it works properly, it's amazingly good. The 2nd one again had the same auto shutoff problem where sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't which, again, wasn't a dealbreaker but now it's developed a leak when it gets hot and spews hot water over whatever I'm ironing (and sometimes my hand.) That's unacceptable and this time when I return it, I will replace it with something else entirely. I would caution anyone against buying this particular iron.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Iron Ever, May 23, 2007
This review is from: Rowenta DZ9080 Advancer Iron (Kitchen)
First let me begin by saying that I bought this iron at Bed Bath & Beyond with one of their ubiquitous 20% discount coupons. I also had a gift card at BB&B, so I ended up paying $80 for this iron. I've also owned and used other Rowentas, Sunbeams, and every iron in use at Hilton and Marriott hotels (I travel a lot for work). Without hesitation I can safely say this is the best iron I've ever used.

I've been using it everyday for about 2 weeks now, so I can't address reliability issues. But, this iron is amazing. It takes no time at all to iron my clothes. Almost every temperature setting this iron uses produces steam. I love that feature, it makes getting wrinkles out so much easier and less time consuming. This iron is also heavy and does not require any downward force to do its job. It's weight alone is more than sufficient to iron anything.

I also like the alert feature this iron uses. When you turn the iron on and select a temperature setting, the iron displays a yellow light. When the iron reaches the desired temperature, it shows green. Also, if you need to turn the temperature down, it will display red until it is safe to use and then reverts to green. This is especially nice.

The automatic shutoff is amazing on the iron. I was ironing some khaki pants and my new puppy pooped on the floor. Needless to say I got distracted, took her outside to relieve herself, cleaned the poop and then went back to ironing. To my horror I had left my new iron down on the pants. I walked over thinking I had destroyed my pants, and worse the IRON!!! In fact, neither was ruined or suffered in any way. This iron shut itself off and saved them both.

I would recommend this iron to anyone. It is easily the best iron you can buy. Even if I had to pay full price for it, I would. But then again, why would you since BB&B throws 20% discounts around like candy?
