I received the "kit", two cheap cloths and a very small tube of cream. This is supposed to be a repeat process done on a hot iron and it is a slow process that leaves a lot behind. It may work but you would have to be very patient and still it may leave some burn traces behind.

The simple alternative, get a small tube or bottle of FLITZ METAL POLISH and your iron's stainless steel sole will be clean in under 2 minutes. A German invention Flitz has been around for years and is inexpensive and available from your local hardware store or from old reliable Amazon.com.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked like a charm, March 24, 2010

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. If you follow the directions, it works like a charm. It took like 2 minutes, if that. I think that most folks are not following directions on the use of the iron itself. We have softened water and a reverse osmosis system, which is what I use. Hard water will cause issues that cannot be removed by this cleaner. Squirt a little of teh cream on the supplied rag, rub the hot (empty!) iron over it, and voila, clean iron. Use the polishing cloth to buff it a bit, and burst a bit of steam on a rag to get out anything in the steam holes and it is as good as new. Buildup in the steam holes is a different issue...bad water! Buy a gallon of Crystal Geiser water for like $2 and use that for less gunk build up.

Did not take off all of the residue. I spent 30 minutes trying to get the residue off, but still had some left. I have only had the iron for 6 months and I use filtered water.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works like magic!, September 2, 2008
This review is from: Rowenta ZD100 Non-Toxic Soleplate Cleaner Kit (Misc.)
I bought it at Target for ten dollars and it works great. It cleaned my soleplate very quickly and with only one application. I know its a little on the expensive side but it lasts a long time since you only need a little. It polishes really nice and doesn't scratch the plate and comes off really easy. Just be careful because you have to use when the iron is hot so watch out when handling the hot iron so you don't burn yourself. It comes with a really think washcloth to apply it with and then a softer cloth to polish.

I bought mine from Bed Bath & Beyond prior to checking the site. I assumed Amazon would have it for cheaper - I paid $12.99 - but figured it would be through a reseller and shipping charges would even out the cost.

Anyway, I took it home and used it on my non-Rowenta iron. It worked! With a number of applications (it took about five applications vs. one- hence the four stars vs. five) but it cleared off the iron plate and it looks shiny and new.

A couple of other points - the burned ointment smells; and it again it takes a number of applications for the grit to leave the iron. But for 9.99 - 12.99 - it beats buying a new iron!

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved my new Rowenta iron, September 29, 2011

This review is from: Rowenta ZD100 Non-Toxic Soleplate Cleaner Kit (Misc.)
I read all the reviews before I bought it and I was frankly worried at the mixed reviews. Dummy me wasn't paying close enough attention and melted fusibles all over the stainless steel faceplate - heavy sticky nasty. As soon as it cooled, tried the baking soda vinegar emergency fix, no luck.

This was delivered 10 minutes ago. I popped open the box, whispered a small plea for this to work, and read the instructions. OK, old towel on board, 2 inches of goop on white towel, iron in circular motion with HOT iron. For 10 seconds I thought it wasn't working, and then magic. I did press, but not hard, although I do have a heavy Rowenta iron. Swapped out for the cleaning cloth, wiped off the extra, then wadded it up to clean one last steam vent, and my iron is saved, and looks just like new.

Let's just say that I am not an ironing expert. I bought a seriously high-end iron for my quilts, and thought I'd wrecked it. All is well in less than 5 minutes, for 10 bucks. Oh - and I only had to use a little, so I have plenty left over for future emergencies.

I thought that I was going to have to purchase a new iron because of the state of my iron's soleplate but decided to give this a try. I didnt't think only cleaning the soleplate would fix the problem, but it did!
It worked!!! I now don't have to purchase a new iron.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did the trick!, May 12, 2007

I was sure I"d have to get a new iron because the bottom of a fairly new Rowenta was marking my clothing as I ironed, but I tried this cleaner, followed the simple instructions, and it's like I have a brand new iron.

Thanks for this product.
