5.0 out of 5 stars East German Hacksquat Animals reveal their secrets and doses, March 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Rowing/Rudern: The GDR Text of Oarsmanship (Paperback)
This book is a must read for any elite or would be elite rower.

If you follow the principles in this book of being a good GDR boy or girl...you're bound to improve your rowing immeasurably.

It covers pretty much everything from physiology, to boat construction, to history, to training diary ideas and even Socialist principles of the elite German Socialist rower...

The only thing this doesn't include is a 'how to' guide to implement the East German doping technique which they all pretty much used through the 70s and 80s! ;-)

Otherwise, a great read...not for the beginner or recreational rower though, unless you're very keen.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent manual, touching upon all aspects of rowing., April 1, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Rowing/Rudern: The GDR Text of Oarsmanship (Paperback)
This is the East German (remember them?) rowing bible from the 1970s. The training and technique instructional material is useful even today, and the book is filled with other information you never even knew you didn't know, like the proper minimum dimensions for boathouses, boat storage racks, and the like. Translated from German, and as a result not an especially exciting piece of literature, but entertaining nonetheless. The brief comments on why the coxswain must be an avid Party person (and they aren't referring to Saturday night; this is political) are a real hoot. David Lynch

5.0 out of 5 stars Technical, Historical Gem, December 6, 2008
This review is from: Rowing/Rudern: The GDR Text of Oarsmanship (Paperback)
A concise yet complete text on the sport of rowing (as of 1983 or so), yet many of the technical princples hold today. Rowing/Rudern provides an interesting historical perspective on the socialist slant of the former East Germany towards the sport. Good for a chuckle if nothing more.
