5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and stable
If you're like me and want the absolute best quality transfers from your VHS tapes to DVD, here's the steps I took to get the desired results. I'm not writing about how to setup your VCR to your computer; only the settings within the VHS to DVD capture video options.

1.0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 nightmare!
After installing Windows ultimate 7 64 bit on my computer, all of my software was easily compatible except my old DVD/CD burning/authoring software. It was fine for a while, but I eventually needed such a program. So, I purchased this roxio creation 2010 special edition since it clearly stated it was compatible with windows 7.

If you're like me and want the absolute best quality transfers from your VHS tapes to DVD, here's the steps I took to get the desired results. I'm not writing about how to setup your VCR to your computer; only the settings within the VHS to DVD capture video options.

1) When you launch the capture video option in RC09, always select DV as your quality option. Note that a full 2 hour VHS tape will create a 25 or so gigabyte AVI file, so make sure you have a large capacity hard drive with plenty of free space.
2) Unless the tape is too light or too dark, I would leave the custom video adjustments alone. Your call on these settings.
3) Once the VHS tape is captured, launch the application SYNC IT! within the Roxio Creator user interface. Locate the settings options, and make sure it is set to MPEG2 output (this is set by default, but still check). Now locate the AVI file created by RC09. Drag and drop the file into the Sync It!"eye". The conversion usually lasts around two hours, so go take a break.
4) Once the conversion is complete, you will have a new MPEG2 file around 4.75 to 5 gigs in size. This file is now ready to be trimmed, polished up and made into a DVD.

Another important note is that when you convert the MPEG2 file to DVD VOBs, the compilation usually comes in around 5.5 gigs (and that's without DVD menus). I use DVD+R_DL discs to ensure a maximum quality DVD burn without compression of the VHS capture.

I've tried the other quality settings in the Roxio capture feature, and in my opinion none are better than capturing with your tape in DV. Results may vary, but I am enjoying superb quality VHS transfers following these steps. Hope this helps those wondering :)

Oh, and I highly recommend the special edition of RC09, to get the VHS to DVD video adapter hardware. The setup is a cinch, and the application very easy to use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 nightmare!, February 19, 2010

After installing Windows ultimate 7 64 bit on my computer, all of my software was easily compatible except my old DVD/CD burning/authoring software. It was fine for a while, but I eventually needed such a program. So, I purchased this roxio creation 2010 special edition since it clearly stated it was compatible with windows 7.

WRONG! At first, it would not install because it said that the components were not compatible with my system. After going online, I saw that the problem could be resolved by changing the compatibility setting to Vista 64 bit SP1.

So, second attempt at installing, things looked fine, until midway through the install, it began rolling backwards and then threw up a window that said my installation had been interrupted.

After another visit to the support page, I read several postings offering solutions (obviously this is a common problem). I tried EVERYTHING! I even deleted my Microsoft.NET framework files so that the installation would go through (again, a suggested offered by their "experts") All to no avail.

Finally, after numerous attempts and failures, I resorted to emailing their customer support. I clearly outlined all the steps I had taken to try to install the program and asked for further assistance. Lo and behold, they send me an email linking back to their customer support postings (the ones I had said in the email I had already tried).

After emailing them back again asking for help or an authorization of a refund, they provided one solution- try to install in safe-mode. Tried it- didn't work.

After 4-5 hours wasted out of my life, I simply packed it back in the box and returned to back to Costco where I had originally purchased it (Thank GOD for Costco's amazing return policy!)

Needless to say, customer support is a joke, and this software is clearly not ready for Windows 7 users. I would review the actual product, but since I could never get it to install, I can't say if it is a decent program. But I can't help but think: if they cannot produce a program that is compatible with windows 7, then the program must not be well developed.

Windows 7 users- avoid like the plague.

1.0 out of 5 stars First Attempt to Record to DVD Failed! (As did all the rest...), December 15, 2008
This review is from: Roxio Creator 2010 Special Edition With Vhs To Dvd Adapter (CD-ROM)
I decided to purchase this product specifically to record ONE old out of print vhs to DVD and upgrade my music library from Roxio Creator 6. The software/USB adapter loads the feed from the VCR w/o problem-looks and sounds great! However, recording to DVD has not been as successful. I have tried everything prescribed by Roxio online FAQs: updating firmware/drivers, etc, etc. NO LUCK so far. I am waiting for online support to help but I am NOT optimistic. Upon loading the new version, my music library was intact from the old but no playlists are to be found with the new! I fear that I probably will need to recreate them myself in the new version. Good thing I haven't dumped my old version. BEWARE! Nothing is ever easy nor works like claimed!Roxio Creator 2009 Special Edition with VHS to DVD Adaptor Last comment: Roxio online help is responsive but after hours of updating firmware, uninstalling/reinstalling, etc, etc. I returned the software to the store where purchased and bought the Sony VRD-MC5 multi-function DVD recorder. In less than 5min I was recording the VHS tape and it plays on every DVD player I own! Forget Roxio and spend the extra money for the Sony!

2.0 out of 5 stars No luck so far, April 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I wish I would write something favorable about this program. From the package description, it looks like it's just what I need. However, every time I try to run it, it crashes. I haven't been able to do a thing with it. Total waste of money, as far as I'm concerned!

2.0 out of 5 stars Worst software I've seen in a decade!, July 6, 2010

I wish I'd have read the previous two reviews before I purchased. The software crashes constantly. It works only after a complete reboot of the computer, the interface is clunky, it crashes during every use, and I think it is causing other problems on my computer when it is running.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can be a good deal to buy Creator & adaptor together, November 28, 2008
This review is from: Roxio Creator 2010 Special Edition With Vhs To Dvd Adapter (CD-ROM)
I got such a good deal that there was little difference between buying the software alone or the software plus adaptor. Roxio keeps it easy to use interface with even more improvements. Easier to find and the most used programs seem to open in the main page. That makes the programs load quicker. The related program is the media importer section. I plugged in the adapter and I could see my vcr image. Very quick and easy way to preserve videos onto digital. Many dvds options and I can't say what is used the most these days. At least I know that this program will lead me through the right steps to come out witht he right format.

3.0 out of 5 stars A fair product, but...., February 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Roxio Creator 2010 Special Edition With Vhs To Dvd Adapter (CD-ROM)
This product works, but doesn't work well. It runs slow if you have to put more than just a few video clips together. My Computer is brand new and state of the art and it still runs slow and sometimes locks up. Not cool. It doesn't actually come with blue-ray capabilites, you need to purchase this capability seperately. Somewhat false advertising there.... I would consider buying another product before this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Done with Roxio, July 28, 2009
This review is from: Roxio Creator 2010 Special Edition With Vhs To Dvd Adapter (CD-ROM)
None of the Roxio products I bought in the past have ever worked as advertised. Tech support did not solve the problems I encountered with crashing, locking up, and overall poor performance. I am a tech addict, however, and when Roxio came out with Creater 2009 I was optimistic that they had fixed the problems I had encountered in past versions. Well, I was again disappointed. After installing -- and deinstalling -- and reinstalling -- this software many times, consulting with tech support, and online blogs, I gave up. It just won't work!!! Crashes and lockups drove me crazy. I refuse to spend another second of my time to work these problems. I believe Roxio crammed so many features into this package that it is overcomplicated. My advice -- break the packages out into separate products. I tried using less complex packages with good results.
My recommendation: Do NOT buy this software. It will cost you money and a lot of time and frustration.

1.0 out of 5 stars Won't Install - Read other reviews on the other 2009 packages, May 25, 2009
This review is from: Roxio Creator 2010 Special Edition With Vhs To Dvd Adapter (CD-ROM)
I'm not new to computers or Roxio I have bought the upgrades from them starting with version 4,5,6,7 and now 2009. I have a new fast up to date computer system and I have installed / uninstalled this program 3 times so far and no luck. Why can't it just work out of the box like it's suppose to. I don't think I can return this to Sam Club because I lost my receipt so I guess I'll ebay it. This section gives it a fairly good review but if you look at the other package with out the speical video adapters and read that review of 110 plus people you will find it didn't get the good reviews that this section gave it. I love the past Roxio products but not this one.........SORRY THIS PROGRAM IS A DOG

5.0 out of 5 stars Roxio 2009 and VISTA, February 17, 2009
This review is from: Roxio Creator 2010 Special Edition With Vhs To Dvd Adapter (CD-ROM)
Great product, once the frustration of getting to work with VISTA was resolved. Spent over two weeks of back and forth emails and phone calls with Roxio in trying to get program to run properly under VISTA Business. All efforts failed. Finally, as a last resort, I completely reinstalled VISTA. Following updating VISTA and all drivers, and installing Norton Inet Security 2009 - I then installed Roxio. Roxio 2009 then ran problem free! I am able to start the app from Roxio's top menu, or open the individual apps from the Start Menu. All work as advertised. The interface is user friendly, easily able to navigate to the desired function/app. One note, running a specific app from the start menu is a lot faster than selecting the Roxio Shortcut for the top menu. Either way, once it is loaded, the apps perform the same regardless if you are selecting them individually, or from the Roxio Menu.
