I have always been confused when trying to paint sand. A wonderful example of this is explained.
The waves in this book are painted and a great explaination follows.

Purchased the book thinking it would be a good overview. The reviews seemed promising. I've read it like three times now! It is so good and the techniques are really straightforward. I'm about to paint my very first seascape having learned from this book that it IS possible. I understand that there is also a Roy Lang DVD that goes along with this book and am looking to get a copy. If you want to learn how to paint the sea - you can't go wrong with this book.

Living on the coast I can't get enough of the magical light, intense colour, reflections in water or a dark brooding sky over rough seas, the tranquil flat calm of a still day - the ever changing scene. This book shows how I may be able to use paint to capture the excitement of the sea on canvas. I am itching to get going after reading this simply set out art instruction book. It is ideal for beginning artists who wants to paint the sea in oil.

It has really nice pictures of the oil painting.
It has some step by step "how to paint a sea"... I just wishe it had more.

Absolutely a brilliant book; very good for the beginner & experienced painter as well; learnt a lot about construction of a Seascape; from priming to finishing; a real keepsake for painters of the ocean or sea or beaches. 'Number One'!

This book is definitely NOT worth having. I judged this book by its cover but it is utterly useless. There are explanations of techniques but the outcome is definitely rubbish and apart from the image on the front cover which is really nice, the others are dull and badly painted so the technique is obviously not very professional. For that same price I would have bought a real book rather than this one which is more like a small magazine than a book.

An excellent book of ideas for those attempting, for the first time, the complexities of the sea. I would like to have had a few more work studies under different lighting conditions. Certainly a terrific starting point for first timers such as myself.

this guy knows how to paint water but never give you a good tutorial at all, i bought this book 'cause of the painting in the cover... thinking that I'll learn to paint at least that painting... WRONG!!! only shows you how to paint small waves, boring scenes nothing great... last time I'm buying books of this kind in amazon... I'll better go to half price books

Very well presented. Well written. I would recommend this book as a manual for aspiring painters like myself. Some experience with oil painting is needed to follow instructions.

Oil painting is my hobby and I'm self-taught. Therefore, I have purchased many instructional books over the years. My favorite subjects are the sea and mountains, but the ocean is daunting. Mr. Lang's book has helped tremendously---it's not terribly complicated. Additionally, he doesn't use a lot of expensive supplies. I found this book to be just what I was looking for and would recommend it to anyone wanting to paint the sea in oils.
