Editorial Reviews

Roy Lee Johnson is best known for writing Mr Moonlight for Doctor Feelgood and the Interns, which was covered by the Beatles. He made some stunning records for a variety of labels down through the 60s and 70s. His dynamite live performance convinced Jimmy Johnson to record him at Muscle Shoals Sound and sign the record to Stax. It is this rare masterpiece that we are reissuing here.

The album is a brilliant collection of funk, punctuated with a couple of shots of fine Southern soul. The Dryer and Patch It Up are funk club classics and make this album sought-after by collectors. I Can't Stand This Loneliness and Something Special are fine soul moments that showcase his fine voice.

Recorded at the legendary FAME Studious in Muscle Shoals,Alabama this 1973 10 song masterpiece from Georgia born and bred guitarist, bandleader, vocalist &composer Roy Lee Johnson is a true lost gem. A veteran journeyman in the music business who actually penned a 1962 track called "Mister Moonlight" a song later covered by The Beatles;this would be Johnson's lone STAX recording. The Villagers were Johnson's backup outfit featuring Pete Carr on guitars,Michael James on Bass,Roger Hawkins on percussions,Barry Beckett on Clavinet,Ed Logan on Flute The legendary Memphis Horns and a wonderful trio of backup vocalist who are: Sandra Chalmers,Charlie Chalmers,&Donna Rhoades round out this Funky affair. The opening track "Patch it Up" breaks open with a strong James Brown influence. This Roy Lee Johnson original sets in place the plan for the entire album...."sweat from beginning to end"!. "I'll Be Your Doctor Man" another Johnson original continues the style of deep Funk-Soul with Johnson's testifying lyrical tease,a true Soul stirring number. "I Cant Stand This Loneliness" a Johnson collaboration with Jimmy Johnson, co-founder of The Fame Studio's pours out the deep Soul by the gallon. "The Dryer" pt.2 soars as an instrumental Funk collage written by Johnson,Hosea Burch,Micheal James and Ronald Williams a very well orchestrated piece, creating space for marvelous musicianship .
